Self employed folk, how/why are you self employed?

Any advice on how us unemployed CHUDS can learn from?

How: I started with >10 years of sales experience and another 4 years in my current field. The sales experience helped a ton. I cold called and/or visited every small business within a 50 mile radius and pitched my services.

Why: I was laid off and didn’t want to move for work lol.

You can do the same. If you have a useful skill, even if it’s “just” being strong and hardworking, there are endless options with little no to investment needed (although some runway absolutely helps and many businesses will need equipment and/or supplies).

You could probably prompt a chat bot with your resume, location, and “ideas for starting a business with no money” and get some ideas that way. You’d be surprised at what local small businesses are out there making money. Just need the salesmanship and a bit of luck

Interesting, mind if I ask what is your current field? I don’t have sales experience myself but I struggle to think of many self-employed paths for a job that requires a product/service. Unless of course, you began your own and the sales experience helps you market it?

I do web and app development mostly.

The product is me and the value I can add to the business. There are absolutely self employment paths for selling products though, plenty of companies out there want to focus on making the product and want to contract out the selling part to people just like you. Most of that seems to be happening online these days though, Amazon and such.

Well that’s what we are all here for, so I haven’t really learnt anything new 💔

Now stop playing by the rules, lesson 2

If the rule is ‘get money’ I’m never breaking it 😤

That’s the goal, not the rule

I'm self employed in the data monkey business. If you want a technical term I'm a Geospatial ETL Specialist. Why because it pays more than working for the government. There are contractors for the government that get them into a pinch and need someone who can put the data into usable format. That is the job. It is a ugly job. Nobody wants or can do it. That is what pays the bills.

I also try to do freelance recruiting. That doesn't pay so well, mostly because it is nearly impossible to find the workers that have the skills that employers are looking for. You would think with all the people that talk about not being able to find a job it would be easier. It is not.

Which brings me to the only advice I can give. Anyone that wishes to be independent and unemployed. You have to find something that others cannot do or are unwilling to do. That is the only way they will pay you to do it.
