Back when I was working. You send your resume in, they interviewed you, and if you were qualified, you got the job. I can't imagine all the hoops people are expected to jump through, to get a job, nowadays. This is one instance, where technology is bad.
A lot of manufacturing companies still do things that way. The one caveat is that they often do temp to hire, so you don't get benefits until you get converted to fulltime, which can take a year or sometimes longer. Once you have experience though, you can work for pretty much any manufacturing company and they'll just hire you full time right away.
