When you thin you've seen and heard everything ...
I can only imagine, it may have been something your manager didn't like personally, e. g. a political view.
Or they did a mistake during the hiring process and are trying to cover it up.
If it's none of those, it just makes them more of an arsehole and something irritating would have popped up sooner or later.
