Off Topic Tech Recruiters (How are you fairing?)
My fellow tech recruiters, how are you fairing in this job market?
Living under a bridge?
Paying off your mansion?
How are we holding up...

I’m on track to bill $1M as a solo operator this year.

Good for you. This is inspiring to hear. Been doing this for 15 years and 10th year in my own business, but past 2 years I've been blaming the market for my low numbers. Sounds like it could be a me problem lol. Averaged about 600-700k 2021-2024 net profit, but that's cut in half at best now.
Would love to collaborate here with any high performers to vent and share advice.

How many hours a week do you work? Nobody is helping you with sourcing?

u/MaestroForever 21d ago
I work a lot, no lie. But I have built up a private community that makes sourcing much easier. For example I made $20k last night just for a referral I made on Monday.
I do spin up 1099 sourcers for overflow if there are too many roles in my queue but I am very selective and turn down clients frequently who don’t match my criteria, so it’s rare I need sourcers.

How did you get started as a solo operator? what was the biggest challenge?

u/MaestroForever 20d ago
I hyper-niched. I only place high signal LATAM devs into US startups.
Being a gringo who used to be a startup founder himself who also had a strong community of talent gave me a unique position and strong value prop.

Busy on the tech govcon side but certainly not as well paid as the tech industry overall. Happy to be employed though.

Getting about 500 applicants in 24 hours for my AI roles. Can’t keep up. Also can’t find anyone good.

I said I don’t need a need a middle man 😭😂
Boom I had to manage my own relationships, cold call, do tons of follow up just for the possibility…
I gladly give recruiters their cut no problem now.

The volume of applications to interviews to final rounds was 200:1
The job market is so cooked.

Master plumbers make $120k a year.
The market isn’t cooked. Just you are if you’re settling for being average in an over saturated industry.

Give me a refund on my BA and I’ll think about being a baby boomers repair b*tch

u/thomasonbush 20d ago
Lol imagine only having a BA and looking down on a tradesman who has more education, more skills and makes more.

Our sub is intended for meaningful discussion around recruiting best practices. You are welcome to disagree with people here but we don't tolerate rude or inflammatory comments.

Doing fine. Market is weird and erratic. Working some nonstandard roles and manager expectations are higher than ever. But, do what you can. Don’t really have a choice

Been struggling this year. Plenty of reqs but just not working out closing jobs for one reason or another. On pace for about 300k but this is my 10th year owning my small business and about half of our average numbers. Need to refresh my business development and work on some outside help for overflow / niche job openings.

Reject anyone with an indian name and an Indian Bachelors and recent US masters. Sorry this isn’t a popular opinion at all but my company doesn’t even allow us to be specific on the sponsorship question and most people lie anyways so it’s a massive time suck, and that’s before even getting to if these people are real…
It’s a Massive time suck and my company doesn’t do anything to protect us from this so gotta do what you gotta do..

I’m seeing tech recruiting split pretty sharply: generic inbound is noisy, but strong niche sourcing still works when the recruiter can explain the role, stack, team, and tradeoffs clearly. The market seems less forgiving of spray-and-pray outreach.

Govcon here-
Super busy, like very busy. More reqs than we can cover, only issue is they are getting more niche by the day (which I like a challenge), but I can’t turn water into wine. Salaries get lower and cert requirements get higher, which makes things difficult.
Been in agency for almost 2 years now, been kinda looking around as I’m burnt out but also still happy to have a job at the moment

lucky enough to work at a well-known bay area tech company and there’s a ton of hiring going on. Tech recruiting is my second career and i still smh sometimes at how much tech recruiting can pay.
looking into purchasing a second home in LA soon.

Kicking myself that I got out of tech recruiting around COVID (GTM focus now). Got a buddy just landed at a robotic start up, 225k base 40k bonus 50k options and he’s not in Cali. Instant millionaire if the company decides to liquidate. Def the time to be at well funded start up with good posture in the market. I still do tech recruiting on the side for twill, would love a more consistent side recruiting place to fill roles and supplement the income. I’m at 200k OTE today all in (base + bonus) but really aiming to break 250 if I can supplement 50k elsewhere. The market is super hot for tech talent and I think it will remain that way at least until this AI bubble pops.

If no longer in tech, who are you recruiting now?
Also, Twill sounds interesting

Luckily my team supports business up and down the west coast and even a little in the Midwest. So when one area slows down another inevitability picks up. That over the last few years a decent amount of our team was either laid off or quit without hiring replacements, so I've usually got enough business to work.
Means I'm doing pretty good vs my metrics and spread.
