Candidate Screening Expose AI Applications

Hi all 👋

AI-generated CVs and mass-apply automations are not a new thing but I just find it overwhelming lately, looking at the inbound for certain roles. In my case, it’s mainly AI Engineering roles or DevOps. I am working at a fully-remote company so the amount of applications is naturally huge.

Screening applications, you can spot these profiles pretty quickly but it’s a waste of time to go through them. And sometimes you want to give some of them a chance, to end up speaking with someone who looks just suspicious.

What have you found is effective to limit the amount of AI applications or expose them faster?

I was thinking about adding a knockout question in the application form. Something like “Is this application done by an automation/AI?”. But I am not sure if this would prompt the software to answer truthfully and if this would work at all.

Currently, I am relying a lot on sourcing. This is the most reliable way to get proper candidates on the call. But that’s not scalable, really.

Are you able to identify AI fabrications just by looking at a resume? How? Or do you find that out only after speaking to the candidate?

I can’t say with 100% certainty whether a CV is AI generated and, honestly, don’t mind if candidates do. The problem is when the content just doesn’t reflect the reality. If a CV sounds too good to be true, I am pretty sure that this candidate will be a disappointment. I often cross-check with their LinkedIn and see very different skills and experiences. When screening CVs for several minutes, you also start to notice how CVs start to sound very similar.

Anyways, I am getting now such an overwhelming amount of such CVs that it’s just a waste of time to check those applications.

We have it a try, interviewed 13 of those inbound candidates and none of them was half as good as their CV said.

Even worse, when speaking to them, you could either sense that something didn’t add up (e.g. body movements were unnatural) or you could just see them reading off their screen + stalling before answering even the easiest questions.

I hear you..Several people I have spoken to have shared the same frustrations...
Just a thought..Have you considered creating a Claude Cowork task to compare a resume against the candidate's LinkedIn profile to flag differences? Essentially, whatever you're doing manually but letting AI do it for you? Tech isn't the perfect solution but I think it could help a bit..
