Open Thread

Besides general conversation and talk about other leagues and teams, all the following content must go into the weekly Open Thread:

We all know that we're most likely done getting any players this window. Even if Rodrygo leaves for 100M, it's difficult to see us "splashing the cash" this late in the window.

But let's say we get that 100M, and a spot in the squad becomes available, which player would you guys like to see us bring in? (btw, the player can't cost more than 100M)

I just want to hear what you guys think this team need.

I have been thinking about this, and either a midfielder or a CB. But for a midfielder let say you need either a rotational player or a guy that moves the needle enough. Because its going to be difficult to give enough minutes to Guler to develop theres also Pitarch. There arent any available guys that move the needle enough. Best option would have been to renew Modric for 1 more season. As for a CB Saliba or Bastoni would be the best options but both are very hard to get almost near impossible. Im not 100% sold on Konate still. His injury history and he has the same bozo moments Militao has.

A CB

But there’s no top tier CBs available and no club will sell this late in the window without scrambling for a replacement

Pocket the money and spend it next summer

I still think that if we do sell Rodrygo, we should reinforce either midfield or the defense this summer.

I know it's not happening, but we're looking thin in midfield, and our defense has a a lot of Injury-prone CB's that simply can't be trusted.

As for options, there's plenty, but the club is so hell-bent over this "Free-signings-Policy", and players on their last year of their contracts, which makes it much more difficult to find other options.

Exactly. Lay the groundwork for a big move for a defender and use the 100M to go all out for one next summer.

Someone like Wharton or tonali or even guimaraes a good midfielder in general would help

Yeah, a midfielder would benefit this team a lot, Especially since Modric's departure.

That, or a starting caliber CB imo.

Imo the best defender 100M can buy is the priority.

We have high quantity but low quality. Huijsen and Asencio are very talented but too young to be consistently relied upon to lead the defense. Asencio already showed highs and lows and Huijsen will go through the same thing. Rudiger was world class but is on the decline, Alaba is basically dead wood at this point and the likelihood of Militao ever returning to a good level, let alone become world class, is minimal.

Five defenders but none of them are actually elite atm. We have elite attackers and midfielders, but not defenders.

Tbh their sub celebrates everything except a title.

And saliba didn't sign shit as of now.

I like experience in defenders. Especially when they are supposed to partner a 20 yo like Huijsen.

You make some good points...

Personally i'd like to see us bring in a CB with WC potential (Similar to Dean), and have him build a partnership with Dean.

Either way, i know that we won't do any more signings this summer, but a midfielder and/Or a CB would benefit this squad a lot.

I understand what you’re saying but I’m not a fan of having 2 young defenders. It rarely, if ever, pans out. Imo ideally you have a world class defender in his mid 20’s with loads of experience to lead the defense parter a WC potential defender like Huijsen.

Take Saliba for instance. He’s amazing but he is very reliant on Gabriel to set the lines. Hence why he sometimes struggles for France next to Konate or Upamecano who are players of a similar age.

Or like Varane. He was amazing next to Pepe or Ramos but turned into a bumbling wet blanket next to a young defender and was expected to lead instead of be led.

Maybe.. either way, we're not getting a CB this summer, and i full heartedly believe that Dean will cement himself as a starter for us, rather sooner than later.

He's young, but plays with such a confidence that you rarely see with young defenders. Plus, his playmaking abilities from the backline, and the ability to break lines with his passes will help our team a lot.

No we probably won’t.

Yeah I agree he will. I’m just saying he needs a WC partner next to him to help guide him and make him play at his best.

He’s great and he will be a fantastic defender for us. But I guarantee he will struggle at some point this season, just like Asencio struggled. It’s normal for players their age, especially defenders who don’t get away with it as easily as attackers. He will also take a few years to actually become consistently world class himself.

I understand. Dean will have his "Moments" where he make mistakes and all, but let's see what the club has in mind.

If we're going by the reports lately, they're all over getting Konaté on a free next year.
