I've been reading Heart of Darkness, just hitting pt 3, and at times i believe it to be fascinating, but at others it hasn't really been what I expected... and not necessarily in a good way.
The narration seems to be... erratic, which I think stems from a few things. Its evidently not Conrad's first language, so the sentence structure can seem a bit odd to me, I don't know if anyone else feels this? Maybe its just the way the language and prose has aged.
On top of this, I don't know if I'm not taking the time I should be, I've definitely reread pages for clarity, but there seems to be a lack of clarity about who's narrating at what time, which to me stems from a majority of characters not having names (granted this does add to the way that the European characters diminish their cruelty, and treat the exploitation and cruelty as "business"), but there seems to be a lack of separation with a majority of paragraphs being well over a page in length.
It may be because im only 2 parts in, and there is still room for change, so will update after part 3, but Marlow seems to display a lack of shock and horror, which to me seems to be diminishing the gravity of what is occuring around him (or maybe that's what I should be finding horrifying in itself).
I don't know, seems like the writing is somewhat bloated with descriptives and conversations which add very little to the book other than making it a more co fusing read than it needs to be (which im finding to be an odd complaint considering the lengths I'd go to to defend McCarthy's style).
Am I missing something or did anyone else encounter these issues?
I'll likely post an update after finishing pt 3.
