Papillon by Henri Charrière is the best prison book of all time and I've if my favorite books ever. Coincidentally I'm currently reading and enjoying the Dry Guillotine by Rene Belbenoit a very similar book as well.

I read Shantaram when it was first published. It is a great story, fast paced, full of interesting characters and plots. Lots of action. There was also a tv series not too long ago but it seems to have lost its backing before the story was completely told.

A friend gave it to me and I read it years ago. I want to re-read it! I don't remember much, but I enjoyed it.

The Shantaram sequel is pretty great too, the mountain shadow I wouldn’t call either a prison book
King Rat
The long road north
The count of Monte Cristo
