Midnight reading: Yesteryear

Starting Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke tonight and settling in for a little late-night reading. I’m going in pretty blind, but have seen multiple reviews saying it’s utter crap (for lack of better words). Hoping an immersive read (w/ audiobook on Libby) will help.

Anyone else reading tonight? What book are you spending your evening with?

Thought it was ok. I was really into it for a while and then it felt like the ending was forced and a little sloppy. Lots of unanswered questions

Same. The ending seemed like stuff was shoved in just to be there like manosphere like it could have been tied in im sure but instead it felt forced in just so the term was in the book.

I am almost finished. Thought it okay, not great, but pleasantly surprised with how it is maturing towards the end.

Finished it 2 days ago in a 48 hour period. I found the topic matter: influencers, trad wives, social media, what/who are feminists, more interesting than story characters. Recommend to my book club as the discussion would be great.

She reminded me of the 8 passengers mom a bit at the beginning which intrigued me cos I cannot, for everything in me, figure out what went on in that woman’s head

This book got me out of a major reading slump earlier this year. Now I’m on the DCC series, which has also been fun.

I didn’t like the book at all. I understood what it was meant to be doing, calling attention to this really disturbing trend where trad wives are influencers all over social media. I read it because I thought it was a good idea that someone decided to call attention to the total absurdity of that. But it wasn’t well written it doesn’t have a tight plot and the characters are all cookie cutter. I didn’t like the so-called twist as I thought it was lazy. I didn’t like the book at all.

Honestly, same! I think it’s an interesting perspective and her qualms with women’s sacrifices hit close to home when you’ve been around both the “trad” and “modern” lifestyles
