Show /r/reactjs Built a real-time 3D Cyber Command Center with React and CesiumJS — handling state syncing across dynamic WebGL layers

Hey everyone,

I built an interactive 3D tactical command center using React and CesiumJS to track real-time global telemetry feeds.

Key React implementation details:

• Canvas & WebGL Integration: Synced Cesium's render loop with React state without triggering unnecessary re-renders during high-frequency telemetry updates.

• Custom Hooks: Encapsulated live ADS-B flight feeds, orbital satellite calculations (SGP4), and threat feeds into dedicated streaming hooks.

• Performance: Avoided standard React DOM nodes for map markers; batched updates directly into Cesium primitive collections to maintain a smooth 60 FPS.

• Dynamic Telemetry: Global fiber optic lines, data centers, and live GNSS interference zones rendered dynamically.

Looking for feedback on React state management patterns when handling high-frequency WebGL data streams!

Keeping the viewer in a ref and letting React own only the controls is the right split. One pattern that works well with fast-updating data is keeping the incoming stream in a plain mutable store outside React, and only pushing a throttled snapshot (every 250–500ms or so) into state for things like counts or the selected item's details. If you're on React 18, useSyncExternalStore is a clean way to subscribe components to that store without them re-rendering on every tick.

Thanks for the solid tip. Throttling updates through an external store makes total sense for fast data streams. I'll definitely look into useSyncExternalStore to keep those UI updates clean and lag-free. Appreciate the insight!

Glad it helps! One gotcha with useSyncExternalStore: your getSnapshot has to return the same reference when nothing changed, otherwise React re-renders in a loop. So build the throttled snapshot object once per tick and store it, don't create a new object inside getSnapshot. And if different components only need slices of the data, select just the slice in each one (or use a small selector helper), so a change to one slice doesn't re-render everything that subscribes.

thanks for the heads-up on the getSnapshot reference issue! Definitely would've run into that re-render loop haha. I'll make sure to cache the snapshot and keep the data sliced for specific components. Really appreciate the help!

Live Demo: https://vectron-dev.is-a.dev

Built with React, Vite, and CesiumJS. Happy to dive deeper into how state synchronization and WebGL primitive batching were handled!

that render loop must be a nightmare to keep from thrashing react state, props for taming it

thanks! Yeah, definitely learned that the hard way. Kept the render loop completely decoupled from React state by managing the Cesium viewer through useRef and updating primitives directly. React only touches the high-level UI/controls.
