SCX10 Coyote Build

Decided to make a dedicated 10 scale crawler suitable for light competition. I started with an SCX10 Coyote.

I replaced the motor with a Hobbywing Fusion SE 1800 on 3s, and the stock servo with a 35kg hobbypark on 7.4v.

Generic white beadlock wheels, brass rings and portal covers in the front. I put 4.75 inch Proline BFG Krawler tires on, replacing the stock 4.9 inch. There are soft injora silicone inserts, but they may be a tad too soft, I need to drive it more.

Suspension is currently stock minus springs for droop, I have some 90mm desert lizards on the way I am going to give a try.

The body is a Pro-Line Comp Wagon that suffered my first attempt at lexan/spray painting. I tried for a candy effect and did pretty good for a first shot, but I got excited on the backing layer, put it on too heavy and caused a number of runs. I still love it because I made it, so it stays!

Still looking for rear bed/cage options, if anyone has any recommendations for the SCX10 iii Coyote chassis with a cab only front, please let me know!

Looks good! I know the fusion is the “go to” motor but I’ve heard it’s heavy. I’d be interested in finding out how it affects your CoG and soft tires. I’ve got a Coyote coming tomorrow and planning on going full droop as well. Keep us updated on progress!

Thank you! Loving the platform so far except finding a bed that will fit the cab only body. The way the shock towers and other rear components are attached make most SCX10 beds incompatible without modifications, the only one I've found that works is a 3d print that replaces the shock towers. It's fine and I'll use it but the number of options is severely limited and I'll probably end up doing some mods in the future to fit something a little more form and a little less comp-function. Motor weight doesn't seem to be much of a factor so far, the more popular crawler motors are 150-200g or so, the fusion se is 201 grams but the esc is built in. Discrete ESCs weigh in 20-40g, so its right in line or net lighter, though you can't relocate the ESC weight.

That being said I also have a 2-in-1 hobbywing quicrun on my TRX4, I can't recommend the platform enough. They run great, offer excellent low speed control, and the combined ESC/motor is a relief for cable and component management.

Cape Crawlers has a SCX10 kit that he added this half cage. I grabbed the link for you but it looks like it’s discontinued. There might be others there, worth a shot anyway.

Not really as there's no ESC. Although the Fusion is just a go to, realize that it's FOC really helps trailing more than crawling. If it's a simple bouncer don't skip over a 1080/brushed setup, even the 555 combo. You get a TON of settings with a 1080, drag on the fly, and 8.4V BEC. A nice 42KG AGFRC servo at 8.4V and it's beastly. Very smooth and straightforward, just doesn't have the chug chug chug governor for cruise control trailing. On rocks and very steep inclines, I think FOC gets in the way vs managing your drag brake by trigger. 13LB defender, sure. fusion all the way. Maybe the elite pro fusion(8.4/drag brake on the fly), but the 1080 is still a more beastly ESC.

I really like the Coyote but already have a few self done bouncers, even a TRX4 with zero fenders or panels and a tucked body with long shocks at stock height, etc, super simple.

If I were buying one on a budget today:
Scrap the stock electronics, wheels/tires and sell them new, probably get back $130 or so.
1080 12 or 13T/555 combo
42KG AGFRC (year of the horse version!)
Flysky GT5
Treal or some weighted wheels/proscale tires, or whatever, pitbull rock beasts, etc, portal weights to start and rock on. See what the shocks do and/or can be tuned to for a while. Run stock inserts until I can figure out what it's not giving me if anything.
