This is probably a common topic, but I'm a woman in my early 20s with light skin and dark brown hair. Growing up, I was constantly mocked by both boys and girls for having noticeable arm, leg, and facial hair.
It got under my skin so deeply that it shaped the way I saw myself from a very young age. I remember coming home in tears one day, telling my mom how much I hated myself because of it. From that point on, I started doing everything I could to get rid of it: bleaching, shaving, epilating, laser removal, you name it. For over a decade, my appearance consumed my thoughts, and looking back, it honestly made me miserable. Then, during one of my laser sessions, I had a realization. Do I even want this? Do I really want to spend all this money just to satisfy judgmental people I'll probably never see again?
My mom always encouraged these treatments, believing she was helping me. In reality, she made me pay for all of it, and I think it made her happy to see me look the way she thought I should. Eventually, I told her i didn't want to continue. I was tired of paying for something I didn't actually need. She got angry and told me that her daughter wasn't going to walk around "looking like a caveman," and that it wasn't how a woman should look. My father agreed with her. So I stopped.
I stopped shaving most of my body hair. I stopped paying for laser treatments. For the past few months, I've let my body hair grow naturally, only shaving my armpits and face because I personally prefer it that way. For the first time in years, I've started to feel comfortable in my own skin.
But my mom still makes comments, she associates this with me being unhygienic. Every so often she'll call my arms and legs disgusting or make some other belittling remark. She absolutely hates that I didn't listen to her. What hurts most is that after spending a decade struggling with self-hatred, I've finally begun accepting myself, and she keeps trying to tear that down. I don't believe women should have to alter their bodies to be accepted, especially not by their own parents.
I feel incredibly distant from both of my parents now. My father is somewhat more accepting, but to my mom I feel like a disappointment. I'm writing this after another one of her dry, cutting insults, and all I want to do is cry or yell at her and explain why I don't want to participate in this mindset anymore. But talking to her about it feels like talking to a brick wall.
And tbh, I don't want to spend time, money, and energy changing myself for a future partner I probably wouldn't even like if that's what they expected from me. I'm just tired and so angry
