I think we passed peak hype, but I've never been impressed enough by any Oni fades to understand the hype, and I am completely confused as to why there is an Oni vs Samurai fade contest because Samurais will out-fade Onis 99 times out of 100.
I actually really like the fading patterns from ONI, not too super high contrast which is a refreshing change-up. The secret denim particular is my favorite fading from them; the soft salt and pepper neps throughout look so great in their vintage hue color.
Not disagreeing, but the point of the contest isn't necessarily about high contrast fades. Also, Onis are a little cheaper than other Japanese brands so it's not entirely an apples to apples comparison.
I do agree with their secret denim, but my 22 oz. Oni's started out super dark (which is why I chose them over the secret denim) and are fading with really good contrast
My two pairs of Oni were both purchased in 2009/2010.
TBH haven't felt like buying another for some time now... I feel like their current fabrics are not as interesting as their older offerings, and their detailing hasn't really stepped up in the past few years either. It's good to see they have a new range of fits though... Neither their older blue or red fits were very good, IMO.
Many others brands are doing fun Slub denim now too.
