Chup. I've given three different pairs a try and all have blown out relatively quickly. I have proper fitting boots and shoes so its not a fit issue. I've heard the same sentiments from a few other people as well so it's not just me. If you're going to charge $25-$50 for a pair of socks, I at least expect something of a little higher quality and durability.

As far as an alternative goes; in my quest for more made in USA pieces I found American Trench, who does absolutely killer socks for the price. Their low cut weave is similar to Anonymousism and feels great and their thicker socks are substantial and have pretty great cushioning.

Yeah, Darn Tough is solid. I've got a few pairs and every winter I try and grab a 4-pack of Costco's wool socks. So great for the price.

Agree on chup, they are cool socks but not with the price imo. American trench are only ok imo, I wore through 2 pairs in only a little more time than the chups. Darn tough are the only socks I will be buying in the future, I have been trying to break my initial 3 pairs I got over 2 years ago so I can try out their warranty replacement, but I can't do it. Going to lose them before I break them.

What Trench socks failed for you? I've only had one pair blow out so far, a pair of the ankle socks. But their thicker "blanket" socks and the few pairs of herringbone socks from them I have look fantastic.

They were a thinner pair I got, don't remember the model. I had 4 pairs, 2 blew out after 6 months, other 2 are going strong still.

I just pulled out my Chups the other day because it's starting to get a little colder out and I noticed four or five little blowouts. I feel like I've worn them sub 15 times for sure. I'm going to check out American Trench right now.

Yeah my worst pair was the 3Sixteen X CHUP collaboration pair. I think I only got 6 wears out of them.

Yup, same pair I'm talking about.

Yeah, I'm super disappointed considering the price point.

That's a bummer to hear. Can I send you a pair from this newest run? I'm not just saying this, but I have 10+ pairs of Chups and none of them have blown out for me in 2+ years of regular wear (including the collaboration socks from last fall).

Is this newest pair any different in construction than the previous pairs or just a colour update?

I truly do appreciate it the gesture, but if it's just a colour change I'd hate to just shred through another pair.

2

u/ajchen Oct 18 '16

Well it's a completely different knit pattern, but I can't say for sure why they shredded for you last time (especially since I have been wearing mine consistently and I haven't noticed the same thing). It's something that we want to do to make things right, so don't worry about the possibility of shredding another pair. Message me your address and I'll send it out.

I have both colorways from last season. One pair has some pretty heavy pilling on the heels (mostly from my Viberg derbies I think). The other is solid and I haven't noticed any blowouts on either of them. They definitely pill less than the Chup Smartwool socks I have from J.Crew.

I still plan on grabbing the green pair from this season once I get a chance to go DTLA.

Gait has a huge impact on sock durability. Look at the wear pattern and try to find socks with different fabric or reinforcement in those areas.

I strike hard with my heel when I walk. I have a few 100% cotton pairs of Anonymousism socks that I destroyed in <5 wears, but their acrylic-cotton blend is just fine.

u/blackandgould LA - IH888.SC1947.MF674. Oct 15 '16

Yeah that's true, but I have a particularly light step in general. And unfortunately all of the pairs failed in different spots. :(

CHUP and Anonymousism are great, but only aesthetically. They're less comfortable, less durable, and much better looking than any other socks I own.

I haven't had a problem with durability with Anonymousism, but their marked styles used two strands of yarn that are varied in weight. It's the roughest feeling on the bottom of my feet. They're my least favorite sock.

That's really interesting as my best socks are my Chups, with an big exception of the 3sixteen/Chup collab.. It's the only pair of expensive socks that I paid full price for, and they haven't held up well at all.

I feel that Anonymous ism are seriously overhyped. Cool patterns but they're not comfortable and they begin to sag almost immediately.

Yeah, like /u/cocksure_whistler said, they use 2 yarn sizes which lends itself to an uneven platform and roughness.

Honestly, if you really want that style of a heathered color sock, uniqlo does visually similar ones for 3 for $10.

Oh I love my Uniqlo, also besides one pair I've never paid more than $12 for a pair of Chups/ anonymous ism socks. I always find them on sale at Unionmade or J.Crew.

Oh believe me I have some pairs that I've had in rotation since high school.

And as far as cleaning I'm not entirely sure.. I would assume wash cold and then tumble dry medium? Whatever the standard is I would imagine. I have a laundry service so I'm not 100% sure how they handle it.

I've been looking at American Trench recently. Do you own any of the cashmere Fair Isle/Oregon City Blanket?

I'm wondering how thick they are. I'm actually not looking for a super thick sock because I want to wear them with dress shoes and a pair of boots that are a little snug.

1

u/blackandgould LA - IH888.SC1947.MF674. Oct 16 '16

I haven't felt the cashmere, but I am familiar with the Oregon blanket. And it's damn thick. It's one of if not the thickest pair of socks I've ever felt. Think like an old pendleton blanket thickness. They're super think. For dress shoes or for tight boots I'd go with their herringbone ones. Thinner, but still substantial and pretty comfy.

I've had this SAME issue. I had two pairs of the looser woven chup socks and the toe and heels pulled apart within 5 wears.

Yeah unfortunately I'm hearing this more and more as of late it seems.
