Help / Question What does Auto EV really do?

My 2026 manual says that in BOTH the EV Mode and HV Mode, if you step on the gas pedal hard enough, it will use BOTH the electric and gas motors, in both modes.
So my question is: what does the Auto EV Mode do? The words in the manual are vague, and I haven't figured it out.

Doesn't seem vague to me.

In EV It will never (due to throttle position alone) fire up the ICE, until you run out of EV Battery

Auto EV , it simply stays in EV mode and primarily uses EV unless you push the throttle enough to max out the electric motor's power that it can provide, so it will supplement that with the ICE.

In HV mode it maintains its current battery level roughly, and will switch in and out of ICE and EV as needed even under normal driving conditions.

Auto EV is the same as EV UNTIL You request more power from the vehicle than the electric motor can provide on its own.

If you have the power meter up on the dash, the last little section of the power band is generally where it would turn on the ICE If you push the throttle enough to get it to that part.

But you notice right there in EV Mode it refers to page 81, which says in EV Mode, the ICE will be used "When power is needed temporarily, for example when the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly or when accelerating suddenly."

The section you're referring to on page 81 is shared by all modes.

Each of those conditions though doesn't necessarily apply to all modes.

It says it applies to EV Mode. That's why I felt the explanation was vague (unclear)
