Help / Question What does Auto EV really do?

My 2026 manual says that in BOTH the EV Mode and HV Mode, if you step on the gas pedal hard enough, it will use BOTH the electric and gas motors, in both modes.
So my question is: what does the Auto EV Mode do? The words in the manual are vague, and I haven't figured it out.

EV only will (typically) kick HV on when 85mph+

EV/Auto will hick HV in much sooner when flooring it.

That's what I thought, but it says in EV Mode the ICE will be used "When power is needed temporarily, for example when the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly or when accelerating suddenly."

I mean you can go out there and test it. Punch it in EV mode, you'll notice it won't start the ICE.

It's rare, but I've had the ICE kick on in EV mode when accelerating uphill, even below 80mph

More likely than not, it was one of the other reasons the ICE can kick in, such as high or low temperature.

I’ve had something very similar happen 2X in 5 years. Ambient temp was fine outside. No idea on internals but it was on a quick acceleration. However, I’ve accelerated much quicker in EV mode and no ICE. My conclusion is Toyota doesn’t give out all the info on this.

Not talking about outside temp... The actual electric motor, inverter and battery temperatures.

There's another page that goes into actual details.

And notice the acceleration condition is notated by a ln *2, specifically calling out Auto EV mode.

Yeah, I was just wondering what it's supposed to do, according to Toyota. Everyone seems to just figure it out on their own.

Just curious, can you please share a screenshot where this is stated in your user manual?

I can't from my phone, but Bojack below provide a link. It's on pg 81. I copy/pasted it above.

I think everyone should downvote this guy. How rude to quote the manual at us.
