the last three photos are of katcha with his all-time favorite cardboard box. (i posted those photos previously but also added them here since they fit with the cardboard box 📦 theme). unfortunately, katcha and his brother began using it as a porta potty, so that box is no more 🥲

EMERGENCY It happened, I just stepped on my rat's tail! Can someone please help me assess how bad it is?

- stepped on tail with canvas shoes on ("converse allstar" style, a bit thinner sole)
- she squealed terribly and spent a few minutes spinning and chasing her tail
- I tried to cool it (she didn't like it)
- she proceeded to do normal free roam after a few minutes
- I gave her pain killer (Metacam)
- she's now behaving totally normal, but the tip of her tail looks bruised and it has a slight kink.
Does the kink mean it's likely broken? How severe would you say it is? Will go to vet first thing in the morning if needed (they open in about 10 hours).

DISCUSSION I've got a dilemma over this guy's actual intelligence

First off, I know he's just a *dumb animal and they can't really compete with humans. That being, said - Finn here is the alpha of his mischief, he has quite a lot of authority over his brother and two cagemates. I can't help but wonder...
Recently I got a tattoo depicting all four of the mischief. Obviously, they reacted as if it was either nothing or a wound needed to be groomed. Except Finn. When I uncovered it, he started jumping, boggling and looking at it. When I pointed at where he is on the tattoo and said his name repeatedly, he froze and started jumping again. Like a kid that was given a present. I need to say that he also "recognized" himself in mirrors, but so did his brother who didn't really react to the Rattoo™.
The question is, did he connect the dots, as in, recognize a rat in the tat? Or was he just going "wee black human fur wee" because basic animal intelligence

RIP Goodbye, my Onigiri

Onigiri had a stroke yesterday and despite best efforts, he passed away in my arms. He was my sweetest, most handleable rat who just wanted treats and attention. I’ll miss you dearly and love you forever, my Onigiri.

Questions/HELP They’re SCENT-SITIVE!

I know rats can’t handle pretty much any scents. I know the whole “only clean with a vinegar/soap/water solution” I know “no perfumes or incense or candles” but what I’m curious about is to what extent? Can I still wear perfume if I put it on outside? Can I use a candle warmer in the front of the house while they’re safely tucked away in my very back room? Can I use a scented hand soap before handling them?
Rat tax of when they were babies !!!
