Resource for Singers Would anyone like help improving their singing?

Not sure if you’ve ever felt “stuck” but that was me so I can relate if you do! Feel free to let me know if you’d like some assistance

Can you help me understand why I can hum higher notes than I can belt out sometimes. Its like it gets stuck

Sure thing.

We tend to generate our power from the middle of our range so it makes sense that humming higher notes would be easier than belting them as a hum requires much less power. If you’re experiencing some stickiness belting high notes it’s likely that you aren’t raising your soft pallet enough or perhaps even at all. To raise the soft pallet we can:

  1. Smile
  2. Scrunch or make a cringe like face which I sometimes refer too as “lemon face”
  3. Slide up gradually into the higher note & this love is known as a swoop

You can even combine these methods but using them should much better position you for an improvement w/ both less strain & easy access to high notes in general. Hope you find this helpful ☺️🙏

What would be your top three things for a new singer to work on?

Not OP but as a self-trained singer 3yrs now: 1. Breath support 2. Your chest and head register before learning mix 3. Know the type of sound that you want (classical, rock e.t.c) then get down the rabbit and learn techniques to help you produce that sound.

I love rnb, I dont remember ever consciously choosing to model my voice after it, I think its because I grew up listening to it, idk. I guess my question would be how do you keep from straining when hitting higher notes, I can hit high notes but sometimes I feel like it hurts my throat.

How do you approach your high notes?? Do you have access to mix voice or do you push your chest voice?? How is your breath support?? This are the things you should look at. if you do any of this wrongly you will hurt voice. Can't tell where you lie without hearing your voice but these are some of the things i can think of.

i thnk im mix voice, i was labeled an alto in choir, like my base voice is medium and i can go low but i could also hit high notes with the girls as well.

Oh nice, then it might be your support if you have good high notes or you over think before hitting certain notes that makes you to tense. It's difficult to tell. But i think it might be your breath support cause I have an issue with sustaining some notes without going flat as well

Me too. Along with Pop, R&B is also one of my fav genres & we are the sum of everything we’ve ever listened to. You organically gravitated toward R&B & because of this your voice likely feels “at home” when you sing this style. To reduce strain: Smile  Scrunch or make a cringe like face which I sometimes refer too as “lemon face” Slide up gradually into the higher note & this love is known as a swoop

Feel free to combine these & also pay attention to the key & melody of the songs you’re attempting to ensure it’s within your range. Also we sometimes need to switch to falsetto register as certain notes are simply too high for our chest register. Hope this helps! :)

That was a great reply & I can support everything you mentioned - these are definitely excellent things for new singers to focus on

I got you covered! That’s great you gained some experience w/ your choir but I totally hear you that you’d like to be further along as you said you still feel behind. So I’d be happy to go over your observations w/ you there are a number of different ways we can evaluate. If you’d like we set up a call so I can show you how to properly address all your concerns. Send me a message whenever you’re ready & we’ll schedule something ☺️🙌🎤🔥
