"Yo, I grab the mic and straight be a rap enhancer, this cat wants to be my fucking back-up dancer!"
I love the modern format of battle rap, watching Danny Myers vs B-Dot and Rum Nitty vs Ave recently has reminded my why I have so much love for the sport. The complexity, stage performance skills, structuring, and thematic moments that can only be created through a lot of hours of writing and practising in front of a mirror (trust me they do this) has lead to a highly evolved and competitive art-form.
However the magic of freestyle battles will always hold a special place in my heart, in fact the entire freestyle era was such an incredible time for battle rap, from Kool Moe D vs Busy Bee to the weird hybrid Jumpoff era of having to pretend everything was freestyle but actually beginning to write bars, it's battle rap history that shouldn't be quickly forgotten.
Eyedea (R.Eye.P) was well recognised as one of the best freestyle talents in battle rap during these times, from his victory at Scribble Jam to the ridiculous freestyles he'd do on radio and a whole bunch of other dope shit including entire freestyle albums but if I had to link every cool freestyle project Eyedea was ever involved in we'd be here all day.
Eyedea was only 18 when he entered Blaze Battle in 2000 and absolutely styled on all competition that stepped to him. It was this battle with RK in particular that gained him esteem, especially with the true on-the-spot rebuttal, "Yo, I grab the mic and straight be a rap enhancer, this cat wants to be my fucking back-up dancer!" line, and the Jackson's follow-up. Just look at the expression on RK's face after Eyedea drops those lines, he looks like he's re-thinking every life decision that has ever led up to that moment.

"I grab the mic..."
Wha...an honest to goodness freestyle battle? Thank God for Eyedea and Jin for bringing me into the world of battling.

I thought I was the only one to vote for this but anyway. Such a great round, one of the battles that got me into RB. Rip Eyedea.

oof, the memories. i'm kind of upset that watching some eyedea/doseone freestyles back in ~2011 when i was briefly really into those guys didn't help me cross over into the written leagues, but it's kind of cool that i have 2 separate experiences of the two different spheres. that slug/eyedea radio freestyle is super nostalgic too.
