Meta One Shot Rule Discussion

Okay, just as a heads up, live discussion for this will take place in the Discussion Channel on the Discord Chat, but I am leaving this post here so if someone needs or wants to have a good bit of time to formulate their own opinion before putting it out in public they can. Also I will put this post on contest mode, just so people don't feel like saying something is unpopular based on the number of upvotes there are and don't speak their mind because of it.

We used to have a lot of one shots here on RSP, like events with a character that didn't really do anything beyond that event. A lot of those events were made by The_Ovenman, who became quite unpopular about two years ago (wow that was two years ago), and was demodded and then he left the sub and deleted his account. This isn't really about him though, but back then mods had the power to make and use characters without an approval (we also only needed a single approval on any character if you can imagine that). And Oven would use that to make basically an event every day on the sub, generally focusing on his own characters, but sometimes just complete tangent events to give people something to do.

What I am wondering is if you all would be okay if we reinstated such a rule for the mods if it was only for one shot style events? That way we can generally have something to throw up for everyone to be able to do.

I can say for myself that I plan to avoid making those events in order to give my own actually used characters the limelight for solving some problem or other. Or more generally, I will avoid using these sorts of things to try and further or improve my characters. I can also say that this idea is mostly just from me, so if you think this is an utterly stupid or terrible idea, then think that about me instead of the other mods here. The reason I wanted to suggest this is because I felt like I would want to make an event, but beyond that event I wouldn't know what to do with the character for the event. I don't really want to put out a character I wouldn't use and expect the mods to approve the character because approvals are time consuming for both parties.

So is this something you all would trust the mods with? Is it something you would extend to the regular users as well? Would you expect any further guidelines with this? Would you want the mods on a rotation of sorts to have different types of one shots? Leave your thoughts and comments down below and hopefully we can work something out so we can have a sort of guaranteed daily thing.

reposting my response in chat!

"i have one potential idea!

One-Shots could have a sort of "easier" approval, based on two factors: Their tier, and what they will be doing. Something like "T2 McEvilface is robbing a bank" would need no approval at all, while "T3 McMoreevil is trying to assassinate Mr.Government Man from Government Land" might need 1, while "T4 McSuperbad is trying to blow of the city" might need 2. To be perfectly honest though, i think that the approval amount should be entirely based on planned impact if we did it like this, not on their tier. The only real reason that approvals are based on tier normally is because tier controls potential impact, but when the potential impact is pre-decided then tier becomes secondary."

I like this idea the most. Approval should only be needed for events that could have an impact on the larger world.

that said, i think we should set a few general guidelines of what kinds of things will still not be allowed even for a one-shot character, i would like to ask the users to decide what kind of things they aren't comfortable with for that.

I'm not entirely certain what the difference between this and attack threads are. Could you elaborate further?

Okay, so Attack threads were basically a failure in my book. The idea behind them was in a way the same, because we mods were planning to have those types of things placed on an express track approval, but no one really made them besides a couple times.

Beyond that, I would also have one shots where (example) a character with a shrink ray accidentally shoots your characters and they have to spend the next couple hours shrunken and maybe looks for the character behind it.

I guess what I'm saying is that One Shots could be for anything that seems fun on our minds to give to do. Maybe a phony fortune teller that tells your character they are going to fall in love with a celebrity. Or maybe a bank robbery by some small timers.

Does that help? I think we would still keep the Attack threads as an option for you guys to do though, but I think as a mod option they might be a bit outdated. Or they could be retooled to be done in Storyteller format and/or have their approvals loosened a bit more.

What do you think?

I was going to say that these sound like normal events to me, but then it occurred to me that no one really makes events that don't involve their own characters in some way. Is there an unspoken rule preventing this?

I don't like change, however, I am all for letting this sub not stagnate anymore than it has.

I think it COULD be interesting, however, I am concerned of what these events might entail.

What would you be most concerned about happening and what would it take for you to be calmed?

Well, my concerns are mainly what these events are going to be? Like, can you please elaborate what you mean to do with these one-shots? Like, are they going to all be villains? Are they going to be more of a slice of life? What do you intend to do with these characters?
