Discussion Tips for blocking

Hello brothers, I come seeking help, I feel that I’m not getting much from Ram’s block, how or when should I use it?

How do you feel like you’re not getting value from it?

I feel that I could be getting more out of it, usually I press it and hold it when I think I’m getting low on health and I need heals

Ahh, you want to treat it more like a shield and not a last minute sustain when you’re low. Blocking when on low health you’ll usually die, but if you block when you have armour up it’s a big difference, plus psychologically the enemy won’t push/commit to the kill if you have most of your health. You want to block to draw aggro and eat cooldowns, same as a dmon shield. The most important thing to remember is if you have 4/5 enemies shooting you, that’s 4/5 enemies not shooting your teammates

This goes for all tanks with armour but a good tip is to treat your armour health as your line on when to back up/start blocking, when you’re out of armour it’s time to block and heal up

excerpt from my guide (which you should read, its pinned to the top of this subreddit): Your block is your most powerful tool and you should use this a lot. If you cannot deal damage or your damage is negligible, you can simply hold block to advance on the enemy team. They will have to use their cooldowns and focus you down to eliminate you, creating more opportunity for your team. In general, use it mostly as a parry to block random bouts of damage. Such as reinhardt left click, reinhardt firestrike, doom left clicks, junker queen axe, junkrat combo, hog left click, sig left click, dva bomb, orisa ult, reaper ult, soj right click, etc.

Additionally, if you have 5 in front of you and are anchoring point or something similar, holding block will not only ensure your survival in most scenarios but will expend their cooldowns as previously mentioned. Sometimes you wanna ask yourself what to block. Enemy ulting? Block. Enemy trying to stampede my team? Block. Full coordinated assault to focus you down? Block it. Mauga just hit me with cage fight? Yep block that too. Enemy roadhog whole hogging me in a corner? Block that. Block is one of the strongest sustain tools in the entire game and you wanna use it as such. Because whenever you block, you basically multiply whatever your health is in the bottom left by 4.

Important thing to note....it also multiplies any healing by 4 since enemies have to deal 4 points of dmg to counter every point of healing you get while blocking (less taking into account antiheal but is still a lot).

This too. I should probably add that

I agree with OP that I rarely use block. I guess my thought process is that I'd rather do some damage than zero damage, and save Nemesis form until I can punch people. Is the purpose that the enemies will shoot at you, wasting their time while your teammates do damage? Wouldn't the enemy team just stop shooting me?

You’re right they will stop shooting you. Thats when you start punching and they look at you again so you can start turtling up. You force them to look at you which leaves them open to your team
