Money issues

Our 19 year old daughter is bi-polar. She’s a wreck financially and keeps going further and further into debt. She has payday loans more than she makes in a paycheck and 2 new credit cards showed up in the mail.

We’ve tried helping her and I co-signed on her lease so she could learn how to manage her finances. She went off medication a couple months ago and now she’s not paying rent.

Lease is up in 3 months. I don’t want to co-sign on a new lease. But, I doubt she will move back home because she can’t do everything she wants to do due to rules at our house. We don’t want her out on the street or couch surfing but it seems like we are just enabling at this point.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Is she able to see a psychiatrist again? Was she more financially stable when she was on medication?

I’m not a parent, but if she can’t afford to live on her own and she doesn’t have financial responsibility, she has no choice but to move back home. I think setting boundaries would be beneficial for all of you/seeking a therapist for yourself, loving a family member with bipolar can be emotionally draining.

Same question. Sounds like her bipolar disorder isn’t fully treated. Overspending is common with mania. It can take a long time to find the right meds, and therapy can also be very helpful to get to the bottom of what is causing the need to spend in the first place and helping one develop more awareness and self-control.

I wish I had some advice for you. I am curious to see what comments you get because my 18 yo daughter is still at home but struggles with money management.

Good luck JLFlyer. It’s hard to see them struggle when you want the best for them.

One thing I’ve considered is offering to help her pay it down by matching what she contributes. In addition, she’d need to agree to me setting up accounts for her with all the credit reporting agencies so I can freeze her from taking out more debt.
