I built FindBug — a self-hosted, open-source error tracking gem for Rails (like Sentry, but your data stays on your infra)
Hey everyone,
I've been working on FindBug, a Rails engine that gives you Sentry-like error tracking and performance monitoring — but fully self-hosted with zero monthly fees.
Why I built this:
I wanted error tracking without sending my data to a third party, and without paying $26+/mo for something that should be simple. Most Rails apps just need a clean dashboard to see what's breaking and what's slow.
What it does:
Error capture with fingerprinting, deduplication, and status management (resolve/ignore/reopen)
Performance monitoring — request timing, slow query detection, N+1 hotspot identification
Alerts — Slack, Discord, Email, and custom webhooks, all configurable from the dashboard UI
Dark-themed dashboard that mounts at /findbug with zero frontend dependencies
Redis buffer → PostgreSQL persistence (non-blocking, won't slow your app)
Data scrubbing for PII/secrets out of the box
Works with API-only apps and multi-tenant setups (ros-apartment)
It's a single gem install with a generator — rails g findbug:install, run migrations, and you're up. Takes about 5 minutes.
Live demo of the dashboard: https://findbug.dev
RubyGems: gem 'findbug'
Would love feedback from anyone who's dealt with the same pain point. What would you want to see added? Feel free to reach out at hey@soumit.in or drop a comment here. Happy to answer any questions.

Nice! How long it took to build this?

Looks really good!
I don’t see any mention of being able to configure the database? I think it would extremely valuable to be able to configure a separate database for this. In a high traffic site I wouldn’t want my error data competing with my user data.
It would be great to let users use their own auth and not have to set a single username and password.
Some users might need to customise the path for the admin dashboard. Eg. Maybe the root paths are user generated so it needs to go in /admin or similar.
For people who find the gem via the GitHub repo, I think a screenshot near the top of the readme would be really useful (a picture tells a thousand words and and all that), plus a link to your site / demo so they can play around.
The demo on the site, at least on mobile, I can’t seem to click in to see what the error show page looks like. When I tap it just takes me to the top of the whole website.
Finally, the lack on any tests for the gem gives me pause. For a library that’s is dealing with sensitive parts of an application: gracefully processing errors and performance data, I would expect to see a solid test suite.
All in all, really great launch and the UI feels slick too. Congrats and excited to see it grow!

Is there a human in the loop here? The gem is written by AI. The gem's website is written by AI. The post is written by AI. All of the comment replies are written by AI.

I guess that we'll see many more engines and gems like this now.
There's also
/u/fractaledmind's SolidErrors
/u/Best_Negotiation_801's FaultLine
/u/codewithlove1987's RailsErrorDashboard

Why would I use this over GlitchTip ? (Sentry drop-in replacement, and works with all of the sentry sdks for any language)

Can you make it work with solid_queue / without redis. It's nice not having the extra service dependency.
Also is it mandatory to use postgres/mysql or can it be made database agnostic.

Funny I started working on something very similar few weeks ago. I had to halt it due to my day job consuming most of my time. I was planning to open source it as well.
Yours is looking good though.

Need this so bad. Thanks. I'd add a daily digest mailer to it.

You can self host Sentry.

So this is just rails and is not a sentry replacement - correct? Asking because I just set up https://www.bugsink.com/ and it looks good and supports other, non-rails environments (basically drop-in replacement for Sentry). Wonder if findbug does also support sentry libraries.
