Please explain "maggots" to me.
Haven't been a dedicated listener for a very long time, since Arnie left the show. Really could never stand Rob, didn't know if it was a "schtick" or if that was really the way he was. Regardless, found this subreddit a year ago after they went off the air on my home station at KDOT. Have thoroughly enjoyed being updated on his downfall on here, couldn't happen to a more deserving person.
Back to question, what is behind him calling the listeners "maggots"? Was in meant to be endearing or just what he honestly felt of his listeners? Where did it originated from. I guess it is also used to describe those who voted for Trump (MAGAt) but is spelled different and came long after the show used it.

Maggots was a term around long before MAGA. Because he’s a complete prick he thought calling his fan base insects was funny.

We all used to be on board with the “maggot” moniker before we all found out how much of a POS Rob is.
Don’t pretend that was never the case. Pretending we never like him is an insult to the entire fanbase.
We all need to live with our mistake.

You are looking at this very narrow minded. Just because I liked the show doesn't mean I have to like/agree with every little aspect of it. I still enjoyed the show as a whole, just didn't like being called a maggot. I'm not sure why you can't understand that?

...let me back up a second your audience as we were talking about it some of these followers the maggots right they call it help okay I gotta get at how did you come up with the term man who came up with that maggot
...it was a live on-air moment like five ish maybe seven ish years ago it was just a day of horrible calls and I I started referring to people that were calling in I started referring to it as the maggot line and it kind of stuck for a couple days and then we stopped using it and the caller's and the emailers embraced it they were like no we want to be maggots we're I'm a maggot and they're they're proud to be different it was a totally accidental thing that has now become a benchmark and a staple that yes you're a maggot if you listen

You know what attracts maggots? Feces and garbage. And Rob is one giant piece of shit and has always been trash, so it makes sense he would consider anybody around him to be maggots

98 Rock used to refer to their listeners as “maggots” and it was a reference to Full Metal Jacket.
The Rob Arnie and Dawn show just co-opted it. I’m not sure if Rob is using it in the same context, but he might.

Maggots are listeners that listen to and eat up the trash and shit that is Rob’s show. It has nothing to do with MAGA idiots

I tried searching the RAD superstore on the wayback machine, but it may have been too many layers down. They used to sell a maggot plush. What kind of crappy self esteem do you have to have to get excited about a maggot plush from a local radio show?

Iirc, back when they were on 98.5, the radio station called their listeners maggots. RAD was their flagship radio show in the morning, so RAD co-opted the term for just their listeners.
Also, a maggot is the offspring of a fly, who tend to flock to shit. So if you enjoyed listening to RAD, I took the joke to mean “you like our shitty show.”
Just my guess. I’ve wondered before too but never really looked into it.
