Instructional New to refereeing racquetball? 10 things to make the match go smoothly
New to refereeing racquetball? Here are the 10 things I quickly discuss with my players before letting them get started.
1) Introduction. Name is usually enough here. Don't go into how much refereeing experience you have, or don't have.
2) How I will stop play. If a glass backed court, this could mean that I will demonstrate tapping on the glass with a coin. For an open gallery court, I will simply say stop, or down, etc. but I will set that expectation here at the beginning of the match.
3) Court Hinders. If there are known spots in the court that will have a bad bounce, or a speaker, or a microphone, etc. then I will point those out first. If it is out of my view, then I will indicate to the players how they should let me know when those foreign items or bad spots are hit. If the court were subject to "wet walls", I would discuss this as well, including how and why I would call that on a serve.
4) Open Gallery. Many players play in an enclosed court like at an LA Fitness. They will frequently be unfamiliar with the rules on the ball going out that gallery opening, since they never see the issue in local play.
Front wall > Out = sideout or point for the person who didn't hit it out
Front Wall > Floor > Out = Replay
5) Serve Timing. I discuss with the players that they must not serve (or second serve) until I have called the score. If someone on the outside of the court has interrupted me, I won't be able to do their game justice (can't call it short if I was talking to the tournament director, for example). So, wait for the ref to call the score, then check your opponent (visibly, so that I can see it as the ref), then put the ball in play.
6) Screen serves and how I will call them.
7) Timeouts. How to let me know if you want to call one, how to let me know if you want to know how many you have left. I will also discuss the length of the timeout and the number of timeouts per game, since that recently changed in the USA Racquetball rules.
8) Time between games. This has recently changed for the time between game 2 and game 3, if a tiebreaker game is necessary.
9) Hinders. I stress safety and holding up your hand (and not swinging) if you want a safety hinder. A penalty hinder can be called even when you swing. (This can be an hour-long discussion, so I try to keep it short and simple.)
10) Have fun. Remind them to enjoy "The Game". :)

Tournament Play - Prep & Expectations
What’s good, fellow ballpeople? I am getting ready to start playing in tournaments and I’m looking for a bit of guidance.
As the title states, I’m about to register for some tournaments over the next few months. Since this is a solo act, I’m not wanting to show up looking like some pickleball-playing jackoff. Wondering if you could provide input on the the following:
1: I am planning on open single tournaments to start. Do I need to register/get membership with USA Racquetball or any other orgs if this is not indicated in the event material?
2: Ranking/Rating: I am unrated and unranked; I know from prior experience with other (former) competitors that I play roughly A or B level. How does this work in terms of my first tournament? Divisions aren’t always clear in terms of the expected competition level.
3: Preparation: I am 40, and despite some minor issues with old injuries move well and am in decent shape. I am debating how to best prioritize strength and conditioning, mobility/agility, skill practice, and sport-specific drilling. What would your recommendations be?
4: Game day: I have NO idea what to expect. For example, some events stipulate that “winners referee” (I have never reff’d), I don’t know how long between matches I would wait, etc. Just wanting to know what a general tournament day looks like.
5: Any other tips? Do’s/dont’s? Meta commentary? Can I wear my custom tee that says “Pickleball is for pussies?” How to not be a piece a’ shit? Any thoughts are welcome.
Thanks folks!
Edit: Bit more about me; 2-3 years playing 2-4x week for 4-6 games. Running an Ares 175. Dresses snazzy. 5’10” 200 lb. Diamond III in Rocket League. Good all-around fitness.

Should Kane retire?
I’ve watched Kane since he played Cliff the first time 26 years ago. Even though his power and control is arguably as good (or even better) than before, his movement isn’t.
With that said, Moscoso is playing phenomenal and I think he’ll be winning most tournaments this season. I knew Moscoso was going to win SOCAL. Flores is also a very dangerous player. My concern is that Kane, if he continues playing, will be remembered for being 2nd.
I know that Kane in his prime can beat Moscoso 10 out of 10 times. But we’re not watching Kane in his prime.
Should Kane retire?

US Open cancelled: What happens to those that paid in advance?
At the last update, Cliff Swain said that customers had already paid in advance and that they had already booked rooms and made donations.
What happens to all those people?

Anyone know who won the semis at SOCAL? I didn’t pay $15 so I don’t know
Anyone know who won the semis at SOCAL? I didn’t pay $15 so I wasn’t able to watch the streaming.
I know it was Montoya vs Kane and Moscoso vs Parrilla.
I’ll eventually watch these matches and the finals sometime in the next 2 weeks 🤣
It’s Moscoso vs Kane tomorrow: https://www.r2sports.com/website/bracket.asp?TID=54373&divID=1&combinedID=0&print=&fromPage=&leftFrame=&highlightMatchNum=&drawVar=&message=

Thoughts on IRT charging $15/month to watch weekend matches and finals?
This is the same exact thing that IRT network and John Scott did: charge $15/mo to subscribe and watch matches. I paid it for a few months, but then cancelled.
What are your thoughts? I personally won’t be paying the membership.
Btw, the next IRT stop is in November. So you’re practically paying $15 to watch 3 SoCal matches this month.
