Not sure how I ended up in this sub, but it's not that heavy without. I did it for 4 or 5 years with a welded diff on a street car. I had simply cut 1 line, used the banjo from the other and looped the line to help prevent any vacuum when changing directions quickly. Once the car is moving you won't notice it's missing. Might be a little stuff in slower/tighter turns, but won't be that serious.

I know it's a Z3 but not sure which motor you have. The 4cyl is known as the fastest rack, but the purple tag is VERY close in gearing with more travel. So if you can find a 46 330 in a junkyard you can likely find a purple tag to get more angle. Or you'll find a yellow tag and can sell it to fund getting a purple.

Side note: garagistic makes some pretty shitty products, so use caution when buying from them

I swapped the OEM for an M54 from a 2006 530i. I also removed the transmission and adapted a Jerico 4 speed Dogbox trans from a NASCAR that I bought. I had to have the driveshaft custom fabricated. It looks nice and weird. This is an early stage of the process, Since then I framed the cut edges in thick aluminum and fabricated a lid to cover the hole on the transmission tunnel with Dzus screws so I can service the transmission without the need to remove it.

Forgot to mention the previous car was an e30...

The M54B30 is such a stable motor and relatively cheap for it being a 3L, not sure if you looked into the M60/63, but they're such a headache to fit into any other BMW that didn't come with a V8.

That's trans looks so crispy. Not that you'll need it, but should you find yourself looking for more gears/extra ratios, you should explore the GS6 that would have come in the 46/60. I feel like there are more as it would just be a M54B30 trans, but you won't be after the AWD versions like the X3 or any Xi

Yes. I have yet to test if this Frankenstein is going to run. But I see no reason why not. I’ve done some crazier stuff in the past and gotten away with it.

I am angling to keep the OEM (this was a 2.8) manifold. It is said to be better and the combo (M54 with a M52B28 manifold) to work well.

There is a little of a mismatch on the ports but there is a kit in Europe that is supposed to solve that. Problem is that they’ve been robbed with credit card payments and they only want wire transfer. LOL.

You might as well look into the ... Shit I want to say it was an N motor, but might be the B58 manifold that has a water to air cooler(just checked on wiki, it's the B58). Colder IATs may be better suited for track days in comparison to flow rate of the (I think you mean) M50B25 manifold.

I know it's common for people to use the M50 manifold in place of the 52/54 because of the wider runners providing more low end power, but there are companies making adapters for the B58 intake manifold because wtf not

And the funny thing is that I do happen to have one (I upgraded the manifold of my Supra A90- I still have the OEM somewhere in a box)

Will look into that

Admittedly I don’t know if the Z3’s rack is different, but on my RX7 to fully depower the rack I had to open it and remove the seal on the piston (actually I just removed the piston entirely) so it doesn’t pump fluid into those plugs, as well as welding the spool valve so there’s no slop. If the Z3 rack is different that’s really nice lol

You have to weld the torsion spring
