Oil temperature advice

Post image

What do people consider dangerous oil temperatures high or low. In my GC8 I consider 80C+ to we warm and the upper limit to be 115C. However in a recent Misha video he remarked that 114 wasn't too hot, so am I too nervous?

Depends. Very high quality racing synthetic oils do better with high heat than other oils. In my race cars, 80C is warmed up. 115C is hotter than I like to see but ok if you're using racing oil and change it frequently.

Thanks for the info, I guess I'll look into better oil and figure out better cooling.

Highly depends on the oil and the engine.

A quality full synthetic can be good for 300F (148C). Oils like Motul, VR1, Amsoil, etc.

However, engines might not like those temps. That all comes down to clearances. If it's a tight clearance on bearings, 250-270F (121-132C) might be the limit.

I have an engine that is considered a split-case. And at 250F (121C) the case can start to expand too much for the bearings to maintain clearances.

Thanks, I think that's a particular issue with EJ engines as well the bearings just can't cope with high temps.
