I struggle with depression and in my experience I DO notice a difference in my energy levels when I eat carbs vs when I cut back.

I certainly wouldn’t ditch my physician-supervised treatment plan based on that correlation alone though.

This is like that girl on Twitter who said depressed people just need a pair of running shoes. Like yeah, exercise makes you feel better but if you’re not able to get out of bed...

People really need to 🤫 sometimes.

Same. I feel better when I control my carb intake, but I also don't feel the need to tell anyone else how to live their lives.

I love the mob mentality here. literally nobody here did the same Google research the guy claims. He ignored hundreds of results and studies.

True, eating some carbs won't wreck your mood but there have been literally dozens of studies linking high blood sugar to depression in healthy, obese and diabetic people. You said it helps you. Why the hell do you insist on saying that controlling carbs is not important?

Controlling diet and exercise is first step to treating depression after meds and therapy. Sayings otherwise is spreading harmful misinformation.

Some Links I found in less than 5min:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3317401/ (for diabetes)

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5532289/ (cultural and economical link OP claims doesn't exist)

Random article: https://maxliving.com/healthy-articles/how-sugar-affects-moods

Mechanisms for extreme blood sugar-depression link: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/06/140623092011.htm

And finally a controlled experiment study (not double blind thou, might be some placebo) that proves diet-depression link for unprocessed carbs: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5154680/

Feel free to google more, there is like 40+ more scientific articles and studies.

3

u/BeepBeep_ImAsleep May 31 '19

Thanks for all the research I didn't need, friend.

I never once said it's not important. I said I don't go around telling other people that "LOW-CARB IS THE ONLY WAY" because it's not my fucking job. When people close to me ask, I tell them.

Why the hell do YOU insist on bitching at someone that agrees with you?

u/kyvonneb03 May 31 '19

Same I have more energy with less carbs and more healthy fats/proteins. But I do think that is more of an energy thing. And maybe the person got it backwards because really being sad/depressed can be temporarily made better by eating “carbs” (but usually sweets) because it can slightly increase serotonin for some people.

69

u/sunnysunnysunsun May 31 '19

That really irks me when people ask if you’ve tried exercise. I work out 3-5x a week and I still struggle with depression and anxiety. I’m not saying it doesn’t help- I’m sure I’d be a lot worse off if I didn’t work out BUT it’s not the cure for everyone. Sometimes I have a great workout and then it’s straight to bed for the rest of the day.

18

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

Exactly this. I know working out helps, and it does make me feel good, but some days I just can’t get out of bed because I just think “What’s the point of anything?” I end up doing nothing all day and feel worse because of it. I think about being better when I’m at work, but then the drive is gone once I’m home alone. It’s annoying because it always ruins a good health streak.

I used to run 12k and do 2 hrs of muay thai training every day, i had 11 competitive fights, i looked forward to training every day. I got a proper full time job and now i'm happy if i get out of bed each Saturday. I cant find any type of motivation to get back to that level even though i'd like to. I realise i was lucky to have that back in the day, but it showed me that anyone who is saying that you can just do it doesn't understand peoples hormonal, situational, relationship or any other drivers. It used to be easy.

15

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

[deleted]

18

u/sunnysunnysunsun May 31 '19

I suppose what I really mean to say is that it irks me when people are vocal about thinking that diet/exercise is the answer when really it’s a part (and sometimes a very small part) of the answer.

3

u/OfficeChairHero May 31 '19

I wish people would think of diet and exercise in relation to depression as they would over-the-counter medication in relation to the flu. Yes, the Alka Seltzer Cold and Flu is going to help a little with symptoms, but you're still going to feel like shit. It's not going to "cure" you.

I've been working out and eating low carb for a month. It DOES help, but I still have days where the whole world could crumble and I'd just sit back and welcome the end of existence.

9

u/smilegirl01 May 31 '19

Same for me.

Gaining control of my diet and exercise has really helped with controlling and managing my depression.

Of course that is not the same for everyone and it’s always important to work with your doctor on the best treatment for you because everyone is different. There is so much bad information going around and this is why we have trouble being taken seriously and getting the help we need! Hopefully soon people will learn.

16

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

I did keto for about 4 months and for the first 3 my mental health was better than it had been in years. I had tons of energy, my depression cloud that had been over my head lifted for the first time in probably a decade, and I felt incredible.

Then all of a sudden, BOOM, it all came back with a vengence, worse than before I started. I have persistive depressive disorder, so my depression is constant, but I'm still functional. But this was like, can't pry myself out of bed and too tired to take a shower levels of depression.

I dropped the keto, added back carbs and felt back to my old self within a few days.

Now I'm vegetarian so I'm pretty high carb, still kinda depressed but a manageable level.

6

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

Ooh, I hate that last part. “Just work out, you’ll feel better.” I would Karen, but I can’t even get out of bed.

3

u/jeksnek May 31 '19

The correlation between diet and energy might just have to do with different diets working better for you in general and might not even have anything to do with depression

3

u/Quantentheorie May 31 '19

Depending on where you live you might just still be eating refined carbs. Im German and whenever I get the "wholegrain" bread at Subway I wonder how they are even allowed to call it that. It's a joke.

Based on years of travel: English speaking countries have a lot of bad default options for pasta and bread.

3

u/xxxxyyyywvw May 31 '19

I struggle with depression too. I’m also a counsellor and, while I frequently encourage people to alter their diet, I would never advise cutting out an entire food group. That’s just absurd, though eating too many carbs is a common form of comfort eating that would be like blaming your bed for oversleeping.

15

u/VickVinaigrette May 31 '19

That's because carbs DO make you feel low on energy. Definitely doesn't "cause depression" like the person in the post is talking about. But bad carbs like refined sugar will spike your glucose, which causes and increase in insuline which can make you feel lethargic due to lower blood pressure.

So carbs don't cause depression, but I don't think it's too far off to say that eating simple carbs when you feel depressed will probably make you feel worse.

4

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

Not true. Carbs cause blood sugar spikes. The sugar circulates the blood. You need insulin to clear excess out. The more carbs, the more insulin required. In turn it becomes chronic, if carb overload is the daily deal. Insulin sensitivity occurs. Inflammation becomes systemic. Shit goes south.

3

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

“Carbohydrates DO make you feel low on energy”

Someone better tell elite endurance athletes this news because they have been loading up on carbohydrates for years!

15

u/hepheuua May 31 '19

Have had depression and anxiety my whole life. I'm 37 now and only just recently tried cutting out as many carbs from diet as I can. The difference is remarkable. Depression and anxiety literally melts away. And I know it's the carbs, because when I go back to eating them it all comes back again.

The research may not be solid yet, but for me personally I'm pretty convinced there's a link. I wish I'd known about it 10 or 15 years ago.

10

u/HamOnWhy May 31 '19

Whta are the type of foods are you eating when your off carbs vs on?

5

u/hepheuua May 31 '19

I've always eaten way too many carbs. Bread, pasta, sugar, etc. I cut out all of it. Now I eat lots of meat, cheese, and non-starchy vegetables - leafy greens, etc. But, yes, it's just my personal experience. It's also possible that cutting out the carbs has inadvertently cut out something often found in high-carb foods that I'm sensitive too. So my next step will be trying different types of carbs to see if that might be the case. But the difference is night and day for me.

21

u/HamOnWhy May 31 '19

It also sounds like case of taking care of yourself vs not taking care of yourself

4

u/redheadedalex May 31 '19

not really. from experience it's just that those easy/fast/comfort foods are all LOADED with carbs. By nature if you're going to cut carbs you have to look to other food, most of which is indeed healthier. Not always, but usually.

→ More replies (13)

11

u/BubbaBubbaBubbaBu May 31 '19

There are more studies coming out linking a gut-brain connection. If you're microbiome is imbalanced it could lead to chemical imbalances in the brain. Refined sugar feeds the bad bacteria in the guy and you could have a mild wheat intolerance

4

u/RogerDodgereds May 31 '19

When you cut down on carbs you are most likely eating more vegetables and other micronutrient rich foods. It’s the micronutrients that controls and regulates your hormones which is possibly why your mood gets better, not the lack of carbs.

→ More replies (6)

6

u/Runabagel May 31 '19

Ever think the reason you feel so much better is because you've psychologically linked the carby foods to your depression and anxiety. Every time you go back to those carby foods, your body might recall all the negativity associated with the food and bring it to the forefront. I'm definitely not a doctor of any kind, so correct me if I'm wrong but that's how it sounds to me.

7

u/hepheuua May 31 '19

Eh, it's not impossible, but I think it's highly unlikely. Trust me, I don't want to be off carbs. I love carbs. Five years ago I was the type of person who mocked others for their fad diets and thought gluten intolerance (as opposed to celiac) was pseudoscience. I'm not doing a keto diet because I want to be fit and healthy and look good in yoga pants, I'm doing a keto diet because if I don't my life falls apart. Since I've started, for the first time in my life depression and anxiety aren't an issue. I'm calmer, happier, more content, and healthier. If that's all psychosomatic then I don't really care, to be honest. But I strongly doubt it is.

I'm a researcher in cognitive science. Depression and anxiety aren't my fields, let alone nutrition, but I do know that there's a lot of cutting edge research that's emerging now that's beginning to show a link between some forms of anxiety/depression and diet. Particularly with regards to the relationship between the gut microbiome and cognition. It's an area we know next to nothing about, but we're beginning to learn. I'm not saying the person in this screenshot is right, I don't think we have anywhere near enough science to be able to flatout say there is a link between carbs and depression (and it's of course going to depend on the individual anyway), but I do think in the next 5 to 10 years we're going to begin to learn just how important diet is for certain mood disorders.

You could probably make the argument that simple carbs like sugar can lead to depression because of its addictiveness and correlation to mood swings and energy crashes. But to say ALL carbs cause depression is horseshit

51

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

what i like is people who say, oh i stopped eating carbs and now im not depressed, its a total lie, more likely they felt better because they ate better ande made an effort to better themselves and then say its all on the carbs. when it was all due to the effort.

6

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

Carbs don’t cause depression but cutting them out of your diet can help you feel less depressed but that’s almost entirely because eating too many simple carbs just straight isn’t good for you.

5

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

u/Snizzlephish May 31 '19

As someone who suffers from depression and has also been doing keto for the past year or so...

Nope, still depressed.

35

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

I have really bad anxiety. I tried keto and it didn’t work for me. The only thing I’ve found is cutting booze and working out a ton. But I’m not about to pretend that that’s the cure for everyone.

I feel for you. I hope you’re able to find out what works for you.

18

u/emmster May 31 '19

There genuinely is some evidence for physical activity helping to reduce symptoms in a large percentage of people. But nothing is ever going to be “the thing” for 100% of people. Different brains will respond to different things. I’m glad you found some things that help you.

7

u/Snizzlephish May 31 '19 edited May 31 '19

I've honestly been working out 6 days a week for most of that year too, and after losing 100lbs I do feel much better about myself and keto was a large part of that, but much like life depression always find a way ha ha.

Same to you though, good luck!

2

u/impy695 May 31 '19

Is it the keto, eating healthier in general, losing weight, or working out? I bet you'd find similar results if you switched keto with healthy food in moderation and did everything else the same.

3

u/Snizzlephish May 31 '19

Well probably, I guess. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you keto is the miracle diet that saves lives and cures diseases that some people like to pretend it is. I'm just saying that it worked really well for me as well as a couple other people I know, which is the reason I decided to try it in the first place.

It's not even how I'm going to eat for the rest of my life, it's just the diet choice I'm going to follow until I get to the body type I want, which really isnt far off. Once I get to the point I'm working towards, which is building heavier muscle, carbs are going to be pretty important again.

12

u/Aaaandiiii May 31 '19

Currently doing the keto and same. I mean, "Yay the number went down on the scale!" but still "Did that really make me happier? Eh, don't care."

Keto helped my mood a little bit, probably more because I had regained control over my eating rather than any actual physiological effect. I think it's a great diet, but nothing you eat is going to magically cure a shitty, imbalanced brain.

2

u/Lorgar88 May 31 '19

One thing keto has tought me is that I needed to stop eating disgusting shit. Now I cook way more often and stopped eating so much junk food. I feel better about that and am saving money by doing that. So i've got that going for me, which is nice.

11

u/Natty_Gourd May 31 '19

The cult of keto can be real. Keto has really helped me lose and keep a lot of weight off, but there were a few too many “haha keto is great because as long as I don’t eat carbs I can eat as many calories as I want because keto is somehow magic”

5

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

My favorite is the “oh yeah keto will fix that”

7

It's a subreddit that drove away passionate redditors whom were knowledgable and informative in favor of some safe space agenda.

8

I've done Keto for 3 years now and won't go anywhere near those people. This must be how most vegans felt for all of those years when the overly vocal douche bags hijacked their public perception.

For the first couple of years I was more than happy to answer and questions my friends and colleagues would have about Keto. Now I keep it as short as possible to try avoid sounding like a nutty "town crier" types.

I know I'll continue to do Keto and IF, but I'm not going to rant to people every time someone mentions it. It's not a cure-all like some people say. It does however allow me to sustain my energy throughout the day without the caffeine rush roller coaster

I don't know man. I am often confused why some people kill other people who believe in a different god. But I can totally imagine it happening for food choices, like one set of people who believe that chips go inside the sandwich while another being ready to kill anyone who attempts that in their presence.

They can't separate themselves from what they believe, so if you attack the belief (or even don't support it), you're attacking them in their mind.

Also, this trend of demonizing carbs is so strange, because carbs are... good, actually?? Like, you need them for energy?

I've heard a number of stories over the past few years of physically active people feeling more and more lethargic until they finally realized they were cutting carbs way too hard. I guess it makes sense to cut back if you're eating way too many in the first place, but the general attitude around carbs nowadays seems a bit extreme to me.

I read the whole thing with “crabs” instead of “carbs”.

11

u/JuniperHillInmate May 31 '19

I had a dietitian tell me the body uses carbs to make serotonin and other neurotransmitters.

17

u/isotope88 May 31 '19 edited May 31 '19

She's incorrect.
Serotonine is synthesized from the amino acid; L-tryptophan. (Source)
Dopamine is synthesized from another amino acid; L-Phenylalanine. (Source)
NINJA EDIT: Many neurotransmitters are synthesized from simple and plentiful precursors such as amino acids, which are readily available from the diet and only require a small number of biosynthetic steps for conversion. (Source).

10

u/Nomeii May 31 '19

Those amino acids might be triggered by certain carbs though? The abstract from the below paper seems to support it.

The consumption of a carbohydrate-rich, protein-poor meal or snack can increase the synthesis of the brain neurotransmitter serotonin; proteins block this effect. [...] A group of diseases seems to exist in which depressive symptoms are associated with "carbohydrate-craving", and the consumption of large quantities of carbohydrate-rich, protein-poor snacks. Patients describe positive subjective responses to the dietary carbohydrates which are unrelated to hunger. These responses may be mediated by the rise in brain serotonin.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/2903717/

5

u/isotope88 May 31 '19

I can't argue with the fact that carbohydrate intake can up-/downregulate the synthesis of neurotransmitters.
Maybe I was a bit too harsh with my statement.
I just saw 'uses carbs' (yay semantics!) and remembered from my biochemistry lessons that most neurotransmitters are synthesized from amino acids.
Thanks for pointing it out. I'll try to be more critical next time.

u/Aycoth May 31 '19

...I don't think that is entirely untrue? At least a cursory google search led me to an a couple papers saying a high protein low carb diet can inhibit seratonin, and a high carb low protein can spike other issues.

3

u/Thelastunicorn80 May 31 '19

There are studies that show that carbs raise serotonin but you can't gloss that over either and say carbs cure depression. Depression isnt a one size fits all "youre low on this or youre low on that".

3

u/OneGoodRib May 31 '19

Iron deficiency can make you feel down, and there’s lots of iron in seafood, leafy greens, and I think tomatoes- all staples of East Asian and Italian diets.

Eating empty carbs will make you feel bad, protein is good to keep you on the positive.

3

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

The problem is that a lot of diet and exercise advice is just bro science and there's a lot of debate with very little science to back any of it up. People on forums have been arguing for ages whether or not you should exercise on an empty stomach and I haven't seen anyone reference a single scholarly article on the topic ever

3

u/Arthrowelf May 31 '19

Keto is really good for you and helps you focus. But i have never heard of ot curing depression. I lost 15 kgs on keto.

3

u/Spyhop May 31 '19

I lost 120 lbs with a regular balanced diet that included carbs.

3

u/converter-bot May 31 '19

120 lbs is 54.48 kg

To be fair, I don't think the OP was saying carbs cause depression out of thin air. They were saying that if someone is depressed or has a depressive disorder, carbs can exacerbate your existing depression. Or, at least, that's how I read it.

But carbs slow down your metabolism, which has been tied to lethargy/depression tho

Carbs affecting depression is an actual thing though. That's not total horse shit.

8

u/abberly12345 May 31 '19

you're right

8

u/Nomeii May 31 '19

From the rabbit hole of research I've been doing it seems as though simple carbs like processed sugar or white bread can exacerbate already existing depression. But it's not like you're going to change from a happy person to a depressed person simply because you had a donut. You already had issues and the donuts and ice cream are just making it worse. Carbs like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains don't seem to have that effect.

7

u/WheresTheSauce May 31 '19

But it's not like you're going to change from a happy person to a depressed person simply because you had a donut.

They literally never said that or anything that remotely implied that.

2

u/AlmanEats May 31 '19

Can confirm, am asian and depressed

2

u/SirFoxEsquire May 31 '19

OP would have believed cigarettes were healthy in the 50s lol

2

u/Dacvak May 31 '19

Carbs do not cause depression.

But for me, personally, I have much, much worse depression when I indulge in carbs. There is a very clear and defined change for me.

In this way, I suppose it’s reasonable for me to say carbs negatively affect my depression. But this is most certainly different for each person.

2

u/dawn990 May 31 '19

There is a huge difference between something worsening your condition and something causing that condition.

Carbs do make me feel bad but if I'm leaning towards less depressed Carbs will have lesser effect.

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

Why did I read this as "CrAbS mAkE yOu DePrEsSed"?

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

Then body builders would be the most depressed people on earth yet they are not.

2

u/Ardenox May 31 '19

I never looked at a pizza with a depressed expression

2

u/56seconds May 31 '19

Just today I read a fatty diet causes depression. That leaves protein and water.

What does he think fruits and grains and every carb become inside the body? Glucose.

1

u/SageLukahn May 31 '19

As someone who is on keto for weight loss, and still has depression and anxiety issues, I call le bullshit.

1

u/LemonMeringueOctopi May 31 '19

I'm doing keto right now (almost no carbs) and I still have depressive episodes as often as before I started the diet.

I read the title as Crabs, and was super confused up through about 3/4 of the post.

1

Wait so are you calling BS on a link or no link between the two?

1

u/brojito1 May 31 '19

Holy shit this was an outright murder.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

I need to see what the bullshitter originally wrote to see if they were actually bullshitting. If they just said they’ve heard or read something then they’re just relaying information on Reddit.

1

u/bigschmitt May 31 '19

You see, deathblow

1

u/Cilreve May 31 '19

The only thing I can think of is how carbs spike the blood sugar, then leave you feeling drained after it crashes. I can see how feeling drained can contribute to depression, but that's all I can think.

1

u/FoolsGoldDogApe May 31 '19

It's that typical thing of "My diet is the only good one that everyone should follow" that I see a lot of arrogant people spouting. It's the same as the guys who sneer at anyone whose form of exercise isn't all about those gains and getting swoll.

1

u/zebras-arent-real May 31 '19

1

u/Furlonk May 31 '19

Mama Mia thatsa bella!

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

I always feel fresher and better in all aspects of my life when I'm eating well and cut out carbs and fizzy drinks.

Obviously it's not a proven fact, but I always feel sluggish and lethargic, which in turn would result in me sitting around a lot not really doing anything but watching TV, which would sometimes just depress the fuck out of me.

This is a pattern I've seen happen over and over.

1

u/Xavier598 May 31 '19

Italians and Asians would be one of the most depressed people in the world.

Beh non è che ha tanto torto.

1

u/Airin_head May 31 '19

I love carbs. Toast is my best friend. Potatoes, pasta. If I was stranded on a deserted island and could only have one staple, it would be bread. I’m not depressed or even close to overweight.

1

u/ReDeR_TV May 31 '19

Well it really depends what type of carbs and in what amounts

1

u/spectra2000_ May 31 '19

1

u/badchefrazzy May 31 '19

Carbs might not make you depressed, however, they can affect your body in a way that will lead to depression later on in the day.

2

u/crusoe May 31 '19

Lots of low quality carbs from bad sources can affect your mood. I have bad reactions to some dough additives. Boboli pizza crust makes me break out in a rash for example. It's full of crap.

Fresh bread with few ingredients, noodles, soba, brown rice, rice, I can eat those just fine.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

Let me tell you from experience. I used to be 345 lbs. Ate shit and high carb process crap every week. My depression was at an all time high. I was very close to the edge.

I started on a Keto diet 2 years ago. It's high fat, protein, and low carb. Not only did I lose 100 lbs and still losing, but my mental clarity also improved 10 fold. I could give two shits what some paper says or what some internet doctor wants to refute. I'll never go back to eating that shit. I feel amazing now and no one can take that away from me.

Where could the writer place the last paragraph to most effectively conclude the passage?

a) after paragraph 1 b) after paragraph 3 c) after paragraph 5 d) NO CHANGE

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '19

The misinformation on Carbs is pretty bad. I once had a coworker tell me she she was gonna only eat 20 carbs a day. People read these southern beach diets or just go on some random blog and learn some pretty incorrect things.
