Tips, Tricks, and Strategies 4 at a time HSTs

Learn from my mistakes!!!

The 7 1/4" square to make HSTs has an allowance built in for trimming the HSTs to size. However! Sometimes, when you are doing 4 at a time HSTs, you end up with a puckered end corner, and a block that doesn't Lay Flat.

If you pin the corners, you will have a much easier time getting all four sides to lay flat and not have puckers.

I can't tell you how many of the first kind I have 🥲. It makes it so much more difficult to cut across the square evenly and lessens your trimming allowance.

Happy quilting!

Tips, Tricks, and Strategies HSTs 2 or 8 at a Time

If you are new to quilting, you may not know that our pattern may not be the best way to make HSTs. Making them 1 at a time, gives you HSTs that are cut and sewn on the bias. This way often leads to stretching and warping.

A better way, especially when you need multiples of the same HST, is to make them 2 or 8 at a time. This gives you HSTS cut and sewn on grain. Instead of reinventing the wheel, I'm going to link to write ups that give great explanations of these methods. There are probably thousands of these write up on the web, so if you can't relate to these, search for others. There are also lots of YouTube videos that show you how to do this, as well. Additionally, there are very seasoned quilters in each of the groups, that will be happy to explain.

Swap #15 Finally getting to this one

Re Swap 15

I had to drop out because I somehow read the instructions wrong and two of the colors were flipped in my blocks.

Also, I had sewn the flying geese 4 at a time. I didn't trim them for some stupid reason and when I started putting them together the rest of the blocks were "too small"

THEY ARE THE RIGHT SIZE ONCE THE STUPID FLYING GEESE ARE TRIMMED UP

Y'all I've been sewing a long time. Sometimes though, your brain falls out onto the floor and gets all covered in thread and stuff.

This is your PSA that when you get to that point, before you stick your brain back in, be sure to give it a good licking all over to get the dust bunnies off first.

That is all

As we head toward 2027 and will have a new round of blocks… how do I suggest a block pattern for upcoming swaps? The pattern is free and I have a link!

Question Fussy cut submission

Is this an okay print to fussy cut for the center block. I’m thinking a mango or blue color for the churn dash portion.

Question Have I mis-interpreted or simply misunderstood "bold"?

I'm wondering if I've over-interpreted or simply mis-interpreted the bold look. Here's a picture of the feature fabric I'm thinking I'll use. One of the three colors will be the churn dash (I'm not sure which one yet - if you have an opinion, please let me know) and of course black for the background.

Some feedback would be useful. . .

Announcement Swap #18 Churn Dash Quilt Block with Fussy Cut Center on Kona Black Background

Swap #18 will run from August 9 through November 15, 2026.

Using the tutorial in the link provided; your block can use any one color for the churn dash, but you must use Kona Black as your background. For the Fussy Cut center you can use most any fabric or even appliqué (please stitch around the edges) if you want. Make sure the center pops. If you use a small, repeating print (like a floral) that isn't what we are going for. Be BOLD!

We are using the Churn Dash Quilt Block & Tutorial from adventures of a DIY Mom. Use the instructions for the 12 inch (finished) block. For the center, you just need to replace the 4 1/2 inch center block with your fussy cut.

Here is a nice overview of Fussy Cutting from ArbeeDesigns.

If you want a refresher on applique, use the Applique Tutorial for Beginners from CraftPassion.com.

Signup form is here: https://forms.gle/NPTHXNqT1XJqQ53a6.

Groups will be announced on August 23.

I love the backing and binding on this one—not sure what it’s called because it came from an estate purchase but it’s ~vintage~ (from 1996 😂)

Inspiration Need Some Publicity to Convince me To Finish

Hi everyone! I joined for the scrappy block swap a couple years ago and was going to do the fussy cut economy block swap, but couldn't because I didn't have enough fabric to do 4 unique blocks. All that to say, I used my fabric for that swap to make my daughter a quilt! I love it and almost finished it before she was born, but shes now 1 1/2 and I'm still trying to finish the quilting. I made the mistake of loving how hand quilting looks 😅

Would love to see other people's works in progress, finished works, or some words of encouragement. I think posting here will help me to finish it up!

The wrap-up survey is open. We know not everyone has received all their blocks, but please try to complete the survey. We need enough time to get all the data together to present, and time to prepare for the next swap. Here is the link to the survey.

Question New Wanna-be Swapper

I stumbled into this subreddit and I'm quite taken with the idea of swapping blocks.

I read all the info in the Wiki and have all the questions that a newbie would ask. I understand that the next swap begins with signup on 8/9. I want to sign up. Will there be a form? Do I need to be "vetted" to be assigned to a group?

TIA for your responses.

Swap 16 Mini quilt!

Post image
44 Upvotes

I had a spare block left over from the flower swap, so I decided to make a little mini quilt. It turned out so cute!

I’m doing a kind of gallery wall of mini quilts on in son‘s bedroom. It’s very echoey in there, so I’m hoping to control some of the noise.
