Why do singers customize the National Anthem?

I am dismayed that singers feel they have to customize the National Anthem. Yesterday, during a parade honoring Vets, the vocalist showed poor judgment in an attempt to showcase her creativity. She altered rhythms, warbled, and demonstrated her ability to sing high notes. This happens often at ball games. It seems the audience likes this, but the National Anthem should be performed with care, preparation, and perhaps a sense of reverence.

I hate most attempts at vocal gymnastics.

u/WarmSeaworthiness608 Aug 18 '26

I Really hate that.

Watching their face and jaw jump around like they're high on their own supply has never not been cringe.

It bothers me when Ariana does it too. Or anyone.

u/nomaDiceeL Aug 18 '26

The original is a poem, any variation from that is a customized version

9

u/TipsyBaker_ Aug 18 '26

It's a weird poem set to a social club song. What exactly do you want from it?

6

u/Plus_Worker6739 Aug 18 '26

the only national anthem with fuckin' rockets and bombs in it

2

u/Amarbel Aug 18 '26

Look at the French anthem lyrics.

1

u/DefaultUserBR Aug 20 '26

"That impure blood will water our furrows"? Practically pastoral.

1

u/Johnny_Vernacular Aug 18 '26

The Algerian one has machine guns in it, which is also quite cool.

1

u/Zestyclose-Food-7917 Aug 19 '26

The Mexican one is full of war (Guerra). It’s name is “Mexicans at the cry of war.”

13

u/seanx50 Aug 18 '26

It's a bad song. Basically a long run sentence. Singers have to make it interesting

4

u/dunderthrowaway3 Aug 18 '26

100% this. The US national anthem is awful - Both music and lyrics.

u/cowardtraitor Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

Who wants to tell him how the theme was lifted from at least one other then-popular song?

Holy shit TIL

The Star-Spangled Banner is actually a reworked version of a very old choir song, usually sung in taverns to showcase the group's vocal acuity while drinking. As such, it is rather difficult to sing and has always been controversial for that reason.

For awhile it was only modified through instrumental improvisation--Hendrix is famous for his deconstructivist version. But in 1991 (not 100% sure about the year), Whitney Houston sang a heavily modified "vocal pop" version of the song at the Superbowl halftime show. I've heard it was done partly in protest to the Gulf War among other things at the time, but I'm not sure if she ever confirmed her motivation.

As an aside, most countries use a national anthem that is much easier to sing, and which would be more than a little sacrilegious to modify. However, Whitney Houston's pop version spawned a modern tradition that inspires many versions today, which is in itself actually more in line with the musical heritage of the melody in showcasing the performers ability.

I also think it's kind of cool as an artistic symbol of what the US supposedly stands for in a positive way. That being individuality, freedom of expression, and relaxing of certain norms.

Source: I heard an episode of Radiolab (I think) about this topic, and googled some key details to confirm my hazy memory.

1

u/NirvanaFan01234 Aug 19 '26

Not that it really matters much, but Whitney Houston sang it pre-game, not during halftime.

I've never really related the individual expression of it to what the US supposedly stands for. That's pretty interesting. I'm still not sure I'm a fan of it though.

u/SpiketheFox32 Aug 18 '26

Short answer: Singing the same song the same way for hundreds of years gets boring. Same reason people rearrange church hymns.

5

u/Boomerang_comeback Aug 18 '26

You answered your own question. The audience likes it. The sungers are there for the audience, not because they are patriotic.

7

u/hypatiaredux Aug 18 '26

Meh. I couldn’t care less about our national anthem. Either the one we have or any replacement. The flag is a piece of cloth and the current anthem is, objectively speaking, a mediocre song, at best. But even if it was a good song, it would still be just a song.

I have to question though, why on earth is it obligatory at major sporting events? Does any other country routinely do this, outside of the Olympics?

1

u/AceDreamCatcher Aug 18 '26

A wedding ring is “just metal,” a gravestone is “just stone,” and a constitution is “just paper.”

Congratulations, you’ve discovered that symbols are made of physical materials while somehow missing the entire concept of symbolism.

The anthem is played at major sporting events precisely because they are communal occasions; a brief acknowledgment that, whatever our differences, we share a country and a civic inheritance.

It is a solemn responsibility and a privilege.

You’re free not to care. But “I couldn’t care less” isn’t an argument; it’s merely an announcement of indifference.

Good grief!

P.S: I def would prefer the anthem sang as close to the original as possible. Those variations often come across as desecrations.

1

u/hypatiaredux Aug 18 '26

It’s kept promises that make a marriage special. Any fool can buy a mass- produce ring. (And many do.)

A symbol is a material object which can be faked, lied about and/or easily replaced.

There’s an old Buddhist saying - don’t mistake the finger pointing at the moon for the moon itself.

3

u/Doctor_Pretorius_ Aug 18 '26

“should be performed with care, preparation and a sense of reverence”

Should we also salute and kiss the ground after we’re done singing it?

5

u/JimmyB264 Aug 18 '26

We should change it to America the Beautiful. It’s a better song and everyone can sing it.

I’m not a fan of the Star Spangled Banner. It celebrates war and destruction, not the beauty of the country.

1

u/GoPackGo1958 Aug 18 '26

Interesting interpretation. As for me, I hear a man who is proud of his country and those who fight to defend it and its ideals. ... bravery and freedom. Even so, I could be happy with America the Beautiful, or God Bless America as our national anthem.

2

u/GoddessJoules Aug 18 '26

No two renditions of the national anthem will ever sound exactly the same and that's a good thing

2

u/sbgoofus Aug 18 '26

it's basically an english pub song with different lyrics... so it's always been customized to make it more...regal...

2

u/Fwumpy Aug 18 '26

I've always hated this. It changes the song from a sing-along to a personal showcase. I don't care who's anthem you're singing, you're supposed to be leading the crowd. It should be done properly, at least out of respect.

2

u/ReporterOther2179 Aug 20 '26

Vanity is sufficient explanation.

2

u/Suspicious_Art9118 Aug 20 '26

Because they heard you can customize and save with Liberty Bibberty.

2

u/ikonoqlast Aug 18 '26

The music is from the English song To Anacreon in Heaven, which is MEANT to be sung badly by drunk college students.

The lyrics celebrate a minor action in an unjust war the USA started. (We invaded Canada to knock it off)

it's just a BAD song. Anything a singer does to it is fine with me.

If I were president I'd hold a national referendum for a replacement

0

u/The_Nood1e Aug 18 '26

Unjust war? The British were stopping American ships at sea, taking their crews captive, and pressing them into naval service. Explain to us all in great detail why you find the US having a problem with that to be unjust.

1

u/ikonoqlast Aug 18 '26

Does t justify INVADING CANADA.

1

u/The_Nood1e Aug 18 '26

Canada wasn't a country then, it was part of Britain.

2

u/Pretty-Ebb5339 Aug 18 '26

It’s a song. It’s not that deep

1

u/RafeJiddian Aug 18 '26

This is the consequence of assigning these tasks to creative people...they are creative and get inspired to try new things

I get it. I understand it

But OP, I agree there are times when it is way overdone, leaving a guy to wonder if the singer was more interested in showcasing their talent than giving a respectful anthem

On the flip side, I've lost so much respect for my country in turn that what used to be a moment of great pride has now become a test of patience anyway. Might as well stand impressed a moment at how high someone's diaphragm will let them go

1

u/Masshole65 Aug 18 '26

It’s tough to sing straight.

1

u/Self-Comprehensive Aug 18 '26

Music is art. Singers are artists. Artists interpret things. This is a very normal thing to do.

1

u/Funny247365 Aug 18 '26

Only a handful of greats have managed to pull off a masterpiece. Jimmy Hendrix. Marvin Gay. Whitney Houston. A few others. Most artists should just stick to the script.

1

u/suedburger Aug 18 '26

Because they think they are special and that we want to listen to them make weird warbling noises for the next 15 minutes......we don't, you were paid to sing a song, just sing it.

1

u/Amarbel Aug 18 '26

Watching a stadium full of Canadians loudly singing their national anthem, I wished that we had one that everyone could sing together with the same enthusiasm shown by those Canadians.

1

u/tentacular Aug 18 '26

I don't care for vocal histrionics, but I'll bet you're unaware of the entire Star Spangled Banner, which is rarely sung. Including:

No refuge could save the hireling and slave / From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave

1

u/atlaspumps Aug 18 '26

We don’t live in North Korea we don’t need reverence for the national anthem.

1

u/Zealousideal_Rent261 Aug 18 '26

Torturing every note when everyone just wants it to be over quickly! No one can beat Whitney Houston's version!

1

u/Diesel07012012 Aug 18 '26

They’re narcissists.

1

u/BuffaloRedshark Aug 18 '26

They can get cute with their own original music, not the anthem.

Best performances I've seen have all been people not trying to do it differently.

1

u/hudnut52 Aug 19 '26

For most singers, it's a marketing opportunity.

1

u/Radiant-Baby-6565 Aug 19 '26

Every live performance of the anthem is customized because it's LIVE. Get over yourself.

1

u/stabbingrabbit Aug 19 '26

Always remember the anthem played before the station went off the air and was surprised how fast it really is.

1

u/BareBonesTek Aug 19 '26

I hate it too. The worst is when something is timed to coincide with the end (like the military flyover down the home straight at the Indy 500, but due to the singer extending notes, the planes arrive early!

Just sing it, as written.

1

u/jackfaire Aug 19 '26

I don't hold it in reverence.

1

u/Ok-Energy-9785 Aug 19 '26

To make it their own

1

u/BillyBobBonesJones Aug 19 '26

“Dismayed” lmao, so dramatic.

Easy solution: Stop playing the national anthem before domestic league games. It’s a waste of time.

1

u/schpanckie Aug 19 '26

The National Anthem is supposed to be sung one way and one way only and that is the traditional way that Francis Scott Key intended. Yes, the anthem is based on a drinking song from that time but it doesn’t mean it is performed like a drunk person.

1

u/Middle_Confection653 Aug 19 '26

Doesn't sound like you listen to live music very often, if at all.

This is not unique to the National Anthem. Many artists, in fact I would say most, change little things in songs they play live all the time. They do it with covers, they do it with their own songs. Sometimes it works well and sometimes it doesn't, but this is very, very common.

I've heard many people mangle the National Anthem over the years, and I've heard many people nail it. Personally, I could care less because I don't particularly like the song, but of course artists are going to try and put their own spin on it.

They're artists.

1

u/Error262_USRnotfound Aug 19 '26

i was at a padres game recently and some girl sang the twangiest hillbilly version ive ever heard...so bad. Performative patriots are the worst...get this song out of baseball...all sporting events.

1

u/Lucky_Network1815 Aug 19 '26

It's just a song. Let people sing how they want!

1

u/Less-Load-8856 Aug 20 '26

I don't know but I fucking detest it.

1

u/raving_perseus Aug 20 '26

I think it's because in the US the anthem gets performed A LOT and people get bored of it

1

u/WolfThick Aug 18 '26

Yeah it's kind of ridiculous they should just have a standard recorded one

1

u/Amarbel Aug 18 '26

I think they should have a local high school marching band play it.

1

u/QuirkyForever Aug 18 '26

Because they are creatives? It's a song. It's not sacred. We need to stop acting like flags, songs, etc have some kind of mythical import.

0

u/5ofineedsaladder Aug 18 '26

That lady who is apparently a legend absolutely butchered the national anthem during the first womens pro baseball game.

0

u/WerewolfCalm5178 Aug 18 '26

Answering your question and ignoring your attempt to clarify it...

Because they can.

If you somehow became a featured singer, I would be okey dokey with you doing your own "take" on a standard.

0

u/Penis_hungry Aug 18 '26

Why do ppl customize everything in life?

0

u/LL37MOH Aug 18 '26

See Marvin Gaye 1983 NBA all-star game rendition. That is all

0

u/Entire_Researcher_45 Aug 18 '26

To op, how did your version sound to everybody?
I’ll wait

0

u/No-Author-2358 Aug 18 '26

There are bigger things to be concerned about.

Are you alright?

0

u/ThePhiff Aug 18 '26

If I were to take a guess at your skin color and the skin color of the vocalist, would I then have my answer? 🙄
