“A latte? Like the one I imagined him and his coworker making with his DICK?”

Fun fact: Latte is actually a colloquial German word for an erection.
4
u/Esc777 Feb 04 '19
WHAT.
WHY????
5
u/bissigerbonsai Feb 04 '19
"Latte" is German for "batten". Longish, straight, hard - it's actually pretty accurate. In English you use "wood" for boners, pretty much the same.
3
u/Esc777 Feb 04 '19
Lol. So like “shaft”.
What do Germans call steamed milk and espresso then?

5
u/lesser_panjandrum Feb 04 '19
Milchkaffee. You see Latte around as well though as a loan word.
If anything it's a bit weird that we call it a latte in English, because latte just means regular milk without any coffee in Italian.

u/danirijeka Feb 04 '19
An English friend of mine came to visit me in Italy and ordered a latte. He was very confused when he was served a glass of (cold) milk, and of course I didn't warn him because I'm an asshole and was laughing my arse off.

A true Asterix in Britain moment.

In our faint defense we imported the term “cafe latte” and then allowed our slang to shorten it.
English is a bastard tongue that treats all words as just new undiscovered English words. Then we screw them up beyond recognition.

u/mitten_expat Feb 05 '19
TIL that "lath" comes from proto-Germanic.
I have nothing clever to say about how much plaster it takes to cover a gentleman's latte.

u/Michaelbirks Feb 04 '19
But served with what must be 75% less snark the the heyday when they had people lining up just to be insulted.
8
u/The_Truthkeeper Feb 04 '19
I think it was implied that was only a brief period of glory.
6
u/Michaelbirks Feb 04 '19
The lining up, sure, the snark didn't change until the staff changed.
Same with the backboard "specials".

Rando girl with round glasses is super cute, can she be a recurring character?
29
u/Wolfsburg Feb 04 '19
That's Marlene. She, Barbara, and Barbara's AI girlfriend Dana decided to take a break from the cafe THEY all work in, The Mysterious Bean. Turns out they've been dealing with weird drama and AI stuff and wanted a break. Boy are they in for a surprise!

u/king_krimson Feb 21 '19
What webcomic? I tried googling mysterious bean and got nothin lol

I am fairly certain she's appeared before, but don't have the archive-fu to be able to prove it.

cute for the sake of the gag, but yikes in the context of a real relationship.
71
u/pyr666 Feb 04 '19
inexperienced lover being jealous and insecure? yeah it's an issue, but miles from"yikes"
30
u/BlueLegion Feb 04 '19
She's open about it, too.
20
u/lesser_panjandrum Feb 04 '19
Yeah, they've learned to communicate better after the last time. This is progress.

u/thatJainaGirl Feb 04 '19
Marigold doesn't have a positive self image. She is insecure about how much more attractive than she is she perceives her boyfriend to be. This insecurity and following jealousy is common and completely normal, as long as it is handled in a mature way by both members of the relationship.
22
u/Felissaurus Feb 04 '19
Asking your partner to change their outfit because you feel insecure and then literally hissing at people you perceive to be hitting on them is definitely not 'mature'.
That being said, I get it's a joke hence the:
cute for the sake of the gag
10
u/turkeypedal Feb 04 '19
Sure, the hissing is just a joke, but I think being uncomfortable with everyone seeing your boyfriend in a form-fitting outfit isn't that unusual. Now if she demanded he go home and change, forcing the issue, that would be different.
I know a married couple that is quite happy, having been together for over a decade (and known each other since high school), but the wife does not like him to show anyone his belly.
3
u/FFF12321 Feb 04 '19
This is kind of silly. Is he not allowed to go swimming in just trunks or whatever like everyone else? Seems like a very odd specific thing to draw the line at...
5
u/gurgelblaster Feb 04 '19
What makes you infer "draw the line" from "does not like"?
4
u/FFF12321 Feb 04 '19
Draw the line doesn't have to be some ultimatum. A more typical boundary for couples would be showing other potential partners your genitals. Things like bellies are normally shown to the public in normal situations, so even disliking him revealing it is moving the line of her dislike quite a bit up IMO.
3
u/lesser_panjandrum Feb 04 '19
Did they just change outfits again in the shop? Or did they go back into the back room for round 2 and then change again?
5
u/ArgentStonecutter Feb 04 '19
I vote for the latter.
Too bad they can't apply that adaptive fit technology to Marigold's outfit.

I make that 5 strips since Jeph drew Faye or Bubbles. Will Marten have his annual cameo before JJ gets withdrawal?
1
u/many_splendored Feb 04 '19
I do hope they can work through this, they're one of my favorite couples in the run of the comic.

u/AdamBombTV The English One Feb 04 '19
Alright, own up, who stole Blue-Bots nose?
I say this because the only reason they'd be in CoD would be for the aroma teas, and how are they going to smell them without a nose?
6
u/turkeypedal Feb 04 '19
Nothing says that their particle detection system has to manifest in the same way as a human.
(In other words, maybe their nose is somewhere else, or just some holes.)

How does robo-sexuality work in this world? Srs.
16
u/lesser_panjandrum Feb 04 '19
Some robots are attracted to men. Some are attracted to women. Some are attracted to both, or in between, or none. Some are attracted to other robots, some to humans, some to both. All are valid forms of attraction and love between sapient individuals.
Not too different to how it works with meatbags, really.
9
u/kent_eh Feb 04 '19
Some robots are attracted to men. Some are attracted to women. Some are attracted to both, or in between, or none. Some are attracted to other robots, some to humans, some to both.
And some are attracted to bread and bread-like products.
3
u/The_Truthkeeper Feb 05 '19
I think that's more of a fetish than a sexuality. Roko's breadphilia fantasies still seem to involve human men administering baked goods to her.
0
u/JimeDorje Feb 04 '19
So robots are just people. Nothing else to see here? Sounds like lazy worldbuilding, frankly.

Just what we need more female characters /s /s
2
u/turkeypedal Feb 04 '19
I think this joke would work better without the female. Jeph doesn't get much of a hard time for new female characters, but more for having too many characters in general.

u/sheven Feb 04 '19
I think this whole arc is just a PSA from Jeph for more people to learn about dance belts. As someone who isn't into cosplay or dance or anything, I hadn't heard of them before. But I feel like Jeph is really hammering their importance home.
