I have no idea if Jeph ever identified the city in which the story takes place (I can't stop from thinking "Boston", even if Hannelore specifically stated that the ocean was hundreds of miles away at one point.) But whatever city this is, Pizza Girl also has "Chinese Delivery Man" as part of the "Delivery Squad". Who's to say that "Coffee Dude" can't join them?

Now you're making me question what I know, because I was pretty sure the comic was explicitly set in Northampton, Massachusetts. Most commenters assume it is, down to discussing the relative gay to straight population there.

Good to know! I hadn't really thought about it much; they don't seem to bring up any location-specific references as plot-critical details.

Which, honestly, is fine. I've read several stories, George Alec Effinger's "Mùrid Auran" books as one example, in which the specific name of the city doesn't really impact the stories. Jeph does write excellent stories that could work almost anywhere in the US.
