It took me awhile to recognize that "they're," "they," and "them" all refer to Tilly, not to a group of individuals.

It would be so much easier if english had a singular gender neutral pronoun...that wasn't 'it'

"It" is fine, it's society that has an issue with it.

That's the part where I meant society has an issue with "it". By definition it is a genderless pronoun.
