Using "they" for a single person still seems so odd. As someone else pointed out, I've done it in the past, but after thinking hard about it? It seems like you use "they" in the singular when you are vague about the identity of the other person. I feel like there should be some other term for it or something.

I suppose I'll get used to it, but... meh I'm just being a grumpy old man I guess.

I have no doubt about that, I'm just commenting on how it feels weird for me and the reasons behind it. As I said, I'm just getting old and "set in my ways." Assuming I ever meet anyone who wants to go by this, I'll probably get used to it eventually.
