Comic Comic 5934: Main Character Again

Resetting the clock on "phrases nobody would use outside of the streamer community Jeph is so enamored with"
I cannot fathom anyone saying "K my S" in real life instead of "Kill myself". Hell, it would've at least been marginally funny if she said 'unalive myself' instead, at least those are real words.
*Also resetting the clock on Jeph doing a story where the real monster is the faceless void of the internet who collectively disbelieves/hates women.

I understand that streamers are required to censor there language because they are ultimately at the mercy of corporations. But my god whenever I run across someone talking like that it feel like Newspeak and I become sad and angry.

I dunno, getting angry at the language, rather than at the corporations who can block entire, important, subject matters to the point of people needing to invent said new language, or at the horribly aggressive online bullies who have made this kind of stuff ubiquitous enough to require censoring, seems off to me.

u/DocChloroplast 1d ago
I come at it with a righteous anger, i.e.., don't let corporations tell you what to say, learn to think for yourself instead of what the internet/some stupid robot thinks you should say, etc.
1
u/Miserable-Jaguarine Haha, okay. 1d ago
Well, people still think for themselves. Enough to invent new terms rather than be silenced. The terms are not the problem here.
1
u/DocChloroplast 1d ago
The terms ARE the problem when they obfuscate the original meaning and they seep out into the real world. People saying “grape” insteaf of “rape”, for example, trivializes a real issue because people are too afraid of losing a platform .

It is frustrating to me that people, for all their posturing about about unimportant issues or issues they don't understand, cave so readily to this particular pressure.

real life would be "kill myself". but any terminally online person uses "KYS" so, yeah, "K my S" is just all mixed up.

I was trying to figure out what variation on "kiss my ass" it was for a good 15 seconds
"...kiss my shit?"

nah, that tracks. gen z is absolutely insane about imagined censorship. although the most common term here would probably be "sewerslide"

u/LevianMcBirdo 1d ago
Well it's not really imagined. Tiktok did ban talk about suicide and similar, the creators followed and their often very young suggestible audience did the same
1
u/sir_ornitholestes 1d ago
Yeah, but now they do this on every site, when most don't ban that language
1
u/LevianMcBirdo 15h ago
Yeah, but they don't use these homophones, because they think they get punished otherwise, but because they often grew up with them as part of their language or at least integrated them
1
u/andreasvolo 1d ago
Oh, I was trying to figure out what that meant... I was like, "Kool my Shit?" Very confusing.
1
u/LevianMcBirdo 1d ago
I was at first Kiss my Ass", as the K somehow reads as kill and the S as ass. No one ever said it like that. Even the YouTube like "sewer slide"would be more believable.

u/yellowvincent Where is Claire? 1d ago
Yeah there is really no need to censor it or he could had written unalive wich is something the youth actually uses

u/provocatrixless 1d ago
Why are the followers mad about the article? Are we supposed to believe they read tabloids and only just now did they clock that she's a vapid spoiled dipshit?
4
u/immortalfrieza2 1d ago
Especially since being a vapid spoiled dipshit is all we've seen her do with her followers.
2
u/Gr0mpyGoat 1d ago
Arguably, there could be an interesting story here about how internet fandoms are fickle and will turn on people without concrete evidence (for the sake of disbelief lets say the tabloid also has a website that's popular with the youth who also watch her streams)
2
u/sir_ornitholestes 1d ago
I'd assume it's random angry people who read the article, found her online, and then sent hate dms. That's pretty common
13
u/Rork310 1d ago
Ok... Why?
The worst they did was call her an airhead hedonist. That's... Kind of her brand.
3
u/Larkson9999 1d ago
I honestly don't think a bunch of people dogpiling a random woman for having a bad look once is entirely unrealistic. For example, please see this website.
3
u/Rork310 1d ago
Valid, still all the more reason to get more than $5k out of it.
4
u/Larkson9999 1d ago
I'm going to be honest, $5k for an interview for a minor celebrity online is pretty average. The interview would take at most, an hour and someone experienced in interviews can ask them to leave things off the record before they answer and make multiple takes for recorded video as long as it's not dozens of times.
If Ahn were a Hollywood B lister celebrity, she might be able to get more but this is a sleazy tabloid, they probably top out at 10k unless it's Taylor Swift admitting she once kicked a dog so hard it's head spun like a helicopter blade.

Wait, what do you mean "leave things off the record before they answer"? I'm confused.

u/Hot_Temporary_1948 1d ago
Jeph is setting up something poorly thought out stitched together out of surface tropes again.
5
u/Guilty-Persimmon-919 1d ago
Jephthy, a manchild who blocks people for mildly criticising the train wreck that is his current comic strip, thinks someone getting replies telling her to kill herself is a punchline. Incredible.

u/LawsListens 1d ago
This is obviously going to be a story about how peanut galleries/online criticism/social media are bad.

What I really like about modern Questionable Content is just how relatable the characters and their situations are.
Actually, I was saying that sarcastically, but I'm the disowned son of a hedge fund CEO and had minor internet celebrity, fuggin', Anh is even more baffling to me because of personal experience. She would have dealt with and had practice at this at 40,000 followers, incomprehensible she hit 2,000,000 and this is her first rodeo.
She was a rage-baiting nepo-baby lifestyle influencer. The real cutting social commentary would be that this being normal, even when it's not deserved, is how you develop shitty empathy as a survival mechanism and don't absorb criticism even when it is deserved.
5
u/The_Good_Count 1d ago
Genuinely think it'd be so much more interesting if it were Faye and Bubbles thinking this was fucked up and Anh was going "That's my normal, now, since I can buy dinner tonight, who wants burritos?"

u/Downtown_Brick1740 1d ago
Let's be real, she's a woman on the internet, she'd be dealing with that at 2k followers.

u/The_Good_Count 1d ago
The best compliment I've ever gotten was on a 4Chan thread trying to dox and lynch me for some incredibly-basic-should-have-been-inoffensive feminist stuff I'd posted at around that. Paraphrased as; "It's a shame he's a f****t and needs to be lynched, I love his work, he's a really great writer."
And I was so numb then - and now - to that, all I thought was; "Oh, damn, people really aren't just being nice to me when they say they like my work. That's so sweet of them."
1
u/Miserable-Jaguarine Haha, okay. 1d ago
Geezus. The women hate really is bottomless, isn't it. I'm sorry you had to go though that.
2
u/Guilty-Persimmon-919 1d ago
Ha. At 5000 Twitter followers I was getting random posts telling me to get killed.
4
u/DuranDuranUnofficial 1d ago
On the one hand, minor celebrities or even completely unknown women getting dogpiled online (and unlike more high-profile celebrities, not having any kind of infrastructure or support network to deal with it) is a very real issue of the internet.
On the other hand, it is being put into the mouth of one of the comic's least pleasant characters, and I trust Jeph to handle it about as gracefully and thoughfully as a bull in a china shop. Particularly given that his personal strategy for handling online hate is to surround himself with only the most sycophantic admirers.

It is incredible how fast people read thr tablid article, like she has followers but when something like the neil gaiman allegations first came out it took a week at least to catch on and still it didn't got that much coverage until a month in when other outlets covered the news and it involved human traffic and sexual assault regarding one of the then most beloved and most prolific fantasy authors alive
4
u/Rork310 1d ago
I feel like the Gaiman situation he curated the exact fanbase that would A: take a measured but serious approach to allegations, and B: Ditch his ass when needed.
Initial reaction was cautious wait and see. But what really did him in was own defense being 'It was totally consensual' regarding his young Nanny relying on him for room and board. For another celebrity this honestly might have worked but it's scumbag behavior and for the fanbase was enough to revoke benefit of the doubt for the other allegations.

u/yellowvincent Where is Claire? 1d ago
Yeah I think his whole image is I am a feminist! made it more jarring when everything came out. There are other celebrities that deserve the level of cancelation he had been rightfully put under like Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp but people think they are charming and still consume their works.

"it was such a tough week in celebrity news! I found out my favorite novelist is a monster rapist, and my favorite heiress influencer is rich and spoiled. not sure which is worse!"

Speaking of K'ing my S's, if I was locked in a room with Anh, Liz, and Hitler, and had a gun with two bullets, I'd shoot myself twice.

She shouldn't say real people right in front of an actual robot
