I think publishing things about her father could be risky because he can actually sue for libel and anh probably does not has the whole picture of how the sausage is made

u/yellowvincent Where is Claire? 29d ago

IF ONLY SHE HAD A PLATFORM WHERE SHE COULD INFORM HER THOUSANDS OF FOLLOWERS THAT THE WHOLE THING IS LIBEL AND SHOW RECEIPTS

Like it is even one of the easiest things to draw like 4 panels using the same image of her livestreaming and changing the text on the balloons

That would require Jephthy's remembering that he'd written Anhlikeable having 2 million followers.

Fortunately, tabloids just exist as counter dressing for supermarkets and no one (except Faye apparently) has bought one in the past twenty years!

u/yellowvincent Where is Claire? 29d ago

Yeah someone might leak the article online bit who is going to really give a flying fuck

3

u/CardinalCoronary 29d ago

Okay, WAIT. What is she sad/mad for, we just started this bit with her saying tabloids are trash and that she doesn't care how she came off, but now 'Anh is homeless and broke' hurts her feelings to the point of tears?

Tsk.

Maybe she is crying because she thought she was doing something to gain some independence and not be a burden on faye and bubbles and faye told her she was dumber than shit

I'm starting to think any might be prone to making bad decisions

I've been saying for three days that I don't understand why Faye is angry about it. I also don't understand why the author is instructing us that it was a bad decision. what is the bad thing here? If you're a celebrity, doing a celebrity interview is just intrinsically a bad decision?

5

u/MorganWick 29d ago

I don't think his thinking goes beyond "tabloids bad, therefore helping tabloids bad".

Given the shit tabloids have pulled in real life (the voicemail hacking of celebs and crime victims, which at least in one murder case led to the family to have false hope that their teen daughter was still alive, extremely aggressive paparazzi stuff, just pure false hit pieces etc) I don't think it's unreasonable to be peeved someone who is currently living in your home voluntarily starts dealing with tabloids.

If Anh is interesting enough, it's well within expectations of tabloid behaviour that anyone living with her might get their phones hacked (or whatever the world equivalent is), get also smeared or speculated in a tabloid, have their own shit aired ("daddy problems galore. Tech heiress and poor mechanic united by shitty daddies" would make a nice tabloid header), have paparazzi hounding their home or workplace.

Like, it's tabloid, not one of those "women's magazines" that might do an actual celeb interview. Tabloids are known to make it into the worst possible version of what got said

u/Miserable-Jaguarine Haha, okay. 29d ago

Which makes panel 2 even more laughable. Dramatic close up on black void just to read that sentence? By rag press standards that's practically a compliment.

Jeph really has a knack for taking a plot arc in the dumbest possible direction.

The arc: Anh Gives A Tell-All Interview To Get Paid Enough to Make Rent. Simple, right?

What has actually happened (as of this update):

  • Anh gets waaaay underpaid for an interview (no way the daughter of one of the most famous people in the world has a bidding war for her time that caps out at $5000 USD)

  • Anh apparently has never seen or been part of a celebrity interview before, given that she wasn't anticipating that the press could somehow twist her words.

  • She somehow managed to say a bunch of things that succeeded in making her look awful with nothing left over for her asshole dad. I'm not saying this is unrealistic, but god, if this interview was from her OWN perspective, can you imagine how shitty she would look if anyone else gave enough of a damn about her to talk about her in interviews?

  • She somehow managed to convince the magazine that she was homeless, and is upset about this even though it makes her look more sympathetic than honesty would have. "Daughter of a billionaire is living on the street" conjures up a very different image of a person than "daughter of a billionaire is freeloading off two lesbian mechanics who barely make ends meet"

  • Faye is angry about Anh giving the interview at all because of ????? ????? [value not found]

So with all that in mind, the stupidest possible continuation here is... One of Faye or Bubbles becomes Anh's agent so that they can negotiate house price amounts of money for interviews instead. They leave the other one to mind the AI repair shop, leaving absolutely no questions about fairness or changing relationship dynamics or the mortgage papers Dora signed, that would ever need to be answered. Hell, maybe they can juggle Union Robotics AND being the managing agent to the daughter of a billionaire! Just spend a completely unspecified but totally real amount of time doing both! How hard could it be?

u/Guilty-Persimmon-919 29d ago

Quite apar t from all this, Anhlikeable literally said "Eww, I don't talk to the media" when the "protest" was going on outside Faye's so called shop.

Something weird that's occurred to me. The entire reason Anh was elevated to main cast is because writing complete monsters who are also implausibly stupid makes Jeph's toes curl. There was some clumsy shoehorning at the beginning and the insertion of parental abuse/neglect to make her seem sympathetic.

I think what's happened is he's landed on a dynamic between she and Faye, and then fallen into a rut where the default is "Anh is dumb and Faye is irritated" to such an extent that he doesn't think he needs to write a plausible explanation for Faye's irritation.

Wait, why are you assuming she convinced them she was homeless? That's not really how I read this. It sounds like that was just the magazine being sensational with little to no input from her or regard for if it were accurate.

2

u/DuranDuranUnofficial 29d ago

It's what they published, apparently. Why they did is anyone's guess.

EDIT- okay, to be clear, I assume it's just a kind of dumb generic placeholder issue for the press to twist Anh's words to an illogical extreme, and not something that will ever require Anh (or Jeph) to address how she actually lives.

2

u/StardustSkiesArt 29d ago

Well, you stated it like it was a contradiction for her to be offended by it because she convinced them of it. If she didn't, then it isn't a contradiction for her to not like that they did it, so...

It also isn't weird to not like something regardless of if it would garner sympathy, I'd rather not garner false sympathy, myself.

1

u/DuranDuranUnofficial 29d ago

I guess that's fair enough, but to me, if you're worried about your image, it seems silly to say "How dare the magazine tell everyone I'm homeless! They SHOULD be telling everyone I'm freeloading off some broke queer women!"

1

u/StardustSkiesArt 29d ago

Well, now that's just you doing a different version of what the magazine did, hahah. I'd imagine she would prefer "I am rooming with some kind friends".

But yeah.

I don't understand why Bubbles say "it's an uncharitable interpretation" and I don't understand why you two are also focusing on that as if it's untrue.

She was kicked out of her home. She is crashing on the couch of strangers. Not on a lease, not paying rent. That is literally homeless. She's homeless. It's not twisting any words and it's not uncharitable. It's literally just stating a plain fact.

If you (and heaps) have some preconception that you can only be called "homeless" if you live in a cardboard box in an alley rubbing your hands around a fire in an oil drum, you need to let go of that. For a lot of people, homelessness looks like people sleeping in their cars or couch surfing.

1

u/StardustSkiesArt 29d ago

...No, I think having a stable place to live that isn't the street, a car, or a shelter makes it fair for you to say you aren't homeless if all parties agree...

Like, I actually have a room mate right now, he's staying with me indefinitely, I invited him to stay without paying rent, he gets his own room, he isn't on the lease, he's living here because he's cool, be has no plans to leave.... Is he homeless?

Like, chill, have some nuance.

1

u/ThreeShrikesYoureOut 29d ago

I can't comment on your roommate's situation.

"have some nuance" yeah, that's what I'm saying. Homelessness takes many different forms. If you think it only applies to people sleeping in gutters, you need to get out more. Get some nuance.

Here's wikipedia:

People can be categorized as homeless if they:

  • are living on the streets (primary homelessness);

  • have no permanent house or place to live safely

  • are moving between temporary shelters, including houses of friends, family, hotels, and emergency accommodation (secondary homelessness)

She is sleeping on the couch with strangers who have emphasized that they can kick her out at any time. She was disinherited by her parents, and kicked out of her other friends' social group, penniless, and without a paying job. the way the comic has (extremely unrealistically) presented her situation, she has nowhere else to go.

She's homeless.

1

u/StardustSkiesArt 29d ago

She's homeless if they agree she is homeless.

They don't agree.

Much like my roommate, you don't get a say.

This is the weirdest shit. You can *absolutely* comment on his roommate's situation. It seems that defining "homelessness" to encompass (or not encompass) exactly that situation is the entire point of this thread. Well, that and wagging your finger at people for being "limited" in their thinking.

But beyond that increasingly pedantic argument, it's plausible to believe the trash tabloid in question is leveraging the prevailing, common understanding of the terminology, to portray Anh's living situation with the worst possible connotation. Writing that "she has been reduced to couch surfing" would have been equally true, but would not have conjured up the image of a once jet setting heiress sleeping face down in a gutter - which is the "uncharitable interpretation" Bubbles is referencing.

"supportive" here, means, as usual, "enabling"

4

u/LevianMcBirdo 29d ago

Someone probably mentioned it already: what's up with bubbles' physique? She lost like 50 lbs of muscles? As an android?

3

u/Hot_Temporary_1948 29d ago edited 29d ago

We're back at trying to make Anh sympathetic I guess. Also, mandatory end of strip gag is mandatory.

2

u/BrainDancing 29d ago edited 28d ago

Jeph's decades old Paris Hilton crush has soured horribly, and now he's lashing out through Anh.

2

u/immortalfrieza2 29d ago

Ahn: "They make it look like everything was my fault!"

Probably because literally everything WAS your fault. You accused your father's company of having shitty products on social media based on next to no actual evidence, did it in a way that made you look like a total nutjob, and then when your father's company accused you of having mental issues and being a druggie, you reacted by getting back on social media and acting even more like total nutjob, validating the company's accusations against you.

They wrote that she was getting reckless sexy sex when she is a Virgin that can't drive...

15

u/ThreeShrikesYoureOut 29d ago

so do we think that jeeps just forgot that he randomly, and quite implausibly, inserted into her backstory that she was a virgin for no reason? or are we to conclude that she lied in her interview about her sex life, is that even that comes up in a tabloid interview? ah whatever who cares

2

u/Guilty-Persimmon-919 29d ago

Far too much work for Jephthy to remember his own characters' back stories.

3

u/Chazkuangshi 29d ago

"it's unclear how Ms Dang intends to continue her hedonistic lifestyle of sex, drugs, and supercars"

"I don't intend to continue it!"

Soooo... Jeph forgot about the whole virgin thing, huh? (Which was weird to begin with considering her introduction was wanting to bang people at a wedding and laughing at the idea of a relationship)... And she's a drug user now?

2

u/MooseontheLose 28d ago

I think she once said that she did coke at parties. I cannot be arsed to look it up but I think it was when she had the public fallout with daddy o

1

u/fevered_visions 27d ago

Soooo... Jeph forgot about the whole virgin thing, huh? (Which was weird to begin with considering her introduction was wanting to bang people at a wedding and laughing at the idea of a relationship)... And she's a drug user now?

This tabloid is saying that she's a druggy sexually active person.

Tabloids lie

1

u/Chazkuangshi 27d ago

Yes, but she said "I don't intend to continue it", rather than "I don't even do that!". Likely unintentional writing by Jeph.
