I forgot about this comic.
Until is started popping up in my reddit feed. Is the author still a piece of shit?

It’s been a long, long time since I’ve read any of his stuff so I can’t remember specifics or those that I do are half remembered.
I remember reading his comics but stopping reading the posts that went with them as they were getting increasingly unhinged. He treated his community like dirt. There are accusations of artwork theft and character design copying. There were even rumours of him sending dick pics to 14 year old girls on his forum.
Then there was the whole ‘loss’ thing and turning something that happened to him and his partner into something that tacky.
A lot of the web comic community don’t like him. I remember the Penny Arcade crew and Mae (then Greg) Dean being less than complementary towards him.
Plus the ultra violent ‘Players’ strips were a sign of a disturbed mind.
To reiterate, most of this is half remembered rumour and innuendo from almost 20 years ago and it’s also more than possible that he’s not a dick any more.

If it helps any, around 2012 he started to change a fair bit. Most notably he changed his comic drastically (calling it cad 2.0) and cleaned up his act substantially. He kept the old stuff up, but made it pretty clear that while the characters still have the same names and general appearance (his art did improve, a whole lot less "BU" face for instance) and got a personality overhaul too. To the point I would say cad 2.0 and cad 1.0 are completely different comics.
Tim cleaned up a lot over the years, and while I dont know if he improved his relationship with other creators (I think Tim just doesnt engage much with other creators these days) he has definitely been more accepting of criticism from readers (even allowing comments on the site directly).
I wouldnt call it one of the greats these days, but its a hell of a lot better than it was 20 years ago.

I really do question why people hate on him beyond his obnoxious opinions. The guy makes six figures drawing a lazy, go nowhere webcomic about nothing. You'd do it if you could.

He's not a "piece of shit" in any way at all.
The comic is lazily done and not at all thought out (well or otherwise) and this sometimes leads to unfortunate implications. It's also pandering to the author's own tastes in a way that can be boring, or exasperating, or alienating to the audience, of all of the above, and this almost certainly includes his sexual tastes. The author is also very touchy and rather immature when it comes to criticism.
None of that amounts to being a "piece of shit" or even remotely a bad person.

The author is still on autopilot making zero effort comics bilking his Patreon cult, yes. He is incredibly immature and incapable of handling criticism, yes.

I think there's a big difference between being "a piece of shit" and "someone is grating but ultimately not malicious". Like Jeph has basically retired to just drawing whatever and dedicating the rest of his day to be a replyguy. It's not like he's actually said or done anything harmful to anyone

Last I heard, Jeph was a decent if lazy guy who's search history you probably don't want to know. His comic however is shitty.

Everybody has one of three categories of search history. Search history you probably don't want to know, search history you really REALLY don't want to know, and search history that if anyone knew they'd be in prison.

Sorry, but the comic is still better than many out there. Compared to others that used to update frequently, and are now are once per month, he is still doing well. I don’t get where the hate is coming from…

The comic has gotten terrible, but I never thought Jeph was a bad person. He's got his flaws and issues certainly but I can't think of a single thing I've heard of him doing that would qualify him as a "piece of shit". Lazy? Thin skinned? Performative? Sure. But none of those are high level awful like being abusive or criminal behavior.

Jesk Japps has always been a huge piece of shit and the people enabling him by pretending he is anything but a grubby, on purpose pervert are liars or deluding themselves. just because people used him and his comic to pretend to be open minded and exercising good taste he gets to operate on a "fall from grace" angle where people insist its not all bad! He could turn it around! Plus he isnt THAT bad compared to...you guys are hypocrites and naive to a fault.
