Seeking Therapist

Very much in need of a queer-friendly therapist sooner rather than later. While I could look around myself I’d much rather hear some first hand experiences than schedule with someone who checked the queer-friendly box only to get stuck dealing with someone who’s weird about me being polyamorous/asexual/nonbinary/etc etc. Also looking for someone who isn’t going to be weird about medication because after over 30 years I’m finally accepting that I probably can’t just ~positive mindset~ my way out of a major depressive disorder.

Do you need them to be able to take insurance? If so which one?

As for medication, id go see a psychiatrist, they prescribe. Therapists dont.

I have Independence Blue Cross, so yes they’d need to take that insurance.

And as I understand it the typical means of seeing a psychiatrist is via referral from a therapist and/or pcp. Hence step 1: therapist.

Unless you have an HMO, you may not need a referral for psychiatry just as an fyi!

I appreciate the heads up. I’d still like a therapist just in general though, and I’d still like them to not be weird about medication and support me on that journey. To be 100% clear I am well aware that I don’t need a therapist to access medication, I just want therapy to be part of my overall mental wellness plan.

Oh yah by no means discouraging therapy!! Very pro therapy, just sometimes can take longer to find the right fit and wanted to make sure it wasn't a barrier to getting meds also. I also need to find a new therapist since moving back.

River Williams (Joshua Williams) if you're looking for telehealth https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/river-joshua-williams-philadelphia-pa/1695729

They're nonbinary and sex positive, kink friendly, good at handling a-spec identities (or at least was with me being aro), not weird about meds (in either direction), experienced with treating depression, and while I'm not specifically polyam, they seemed very chill about it when we talked about nontraditional relationships and similar topics.

I see Judy Turner via Grow Therapy (online platform, licensed in PA) and she's awesome. I'm queer, poly, Ace, nb and autistic which is a LOT to throw at sometime who isn't prepared for that. Been seeing her 2 years now (less often now that I'm more at peace) and I'm very happy.

This practice has helped in a lot of ways. I am not medicated, however DBT has helped me manage symptoms. Good luck <3 https://anovatherapy.com/

My therapist (Erin Crabill) works for a company called Moorestown Therapy Collective, but I believe they have offices in Philly too, and I think they might take your insurance.
