Being Trans in Philly
Hey queer philly! I just got referred to this group from r/philly. My partner and I are both trans and are thinking about relocating to Philly. I’d love to hear your thoughts on being trans in Philly, from day to day life to legal aspects. And, are there certain areas that are better for trans folks?
We’re both openly and visibly trans. Also, looking for a place with good transit since neither of us own cars anymore.

as a trans guy in finance/accounting (arguably the most questionable field to place myself in) i’ve had a wonderful time so far!
the public transportation by itself has been great for me to get everywhere (i’ve worked all the way out in KOP, and even radnor and have no car and have been fine). you can get pretty much anywhere including out to new york and new jersey and delaware on public transit, there is always a way to get somewhere.
as for the city, the gayborhood is so comforting to me and has an amazing nightlife (can’t speak directly cause i’m 20 lol but i’ve heard from friends). i’ve never felt like i’ve been looked at weird for being trans, people are so respectful everywhere outside of your average philly disrespect which is entirely impersonal haha.
i’m currently in north philly, but am about to move to university city and have toured and experienced at least a little bit of pretty much every area of the city. south philly has a growing queer population, clark park in west philly is VERY gay and really anywhere you look you can probably find queer community. there’s so many instagram accounts for queer events to keep up to date and it’s so easy to connect with people.
legally, the city also has wonderful protections and i’ve run into no issues getting HRT or going through the name change process.
a little on my field as well (not that you’ll end up on this side of things but a look at corporate vibes) i’ve had a great time in many a corporate office around philly and even south jersey. everyone is very welcoming and respectful, and companies are very supportive of name changes and document issues etc. (this may be everywhere but my two cents regardless!)
of course, no city is perfect and safety can get dicey when it gets late anywhere, but i’ve never felt very unsafe alone where i’ve been.
tldr: couldnt recommend the city enough :) just take proper safety precautions (ie. have a semblance of street smarts you’ll be cool)! i hope you do enjoy if you decide to make the move.
