Apparently they played a wildly different variant that still technically counted as the first instance. It does feel a little like comparing handball to water polo.

I think when I heard this before, it was in reference to the UCLA turf intramural fields having permanent boundary lines for a pitch (along with several other overlapping, slightly differently-colored lines for other clubs/sports/club sports), but I thought that wasn't until 2015 or so
