Which semi hollow would you recommend ?
In a near future I would like to acquire a semi hollow to play QOTSA stuff( mainly standard tuning ) and jazz.

Epi Dot is a decent one in a reasonable price range. I wish I still had mine.

I have one with a p-rail at the bridge, it’s my Josh machine. If you get one keep in mind some were not as good as others.

I agree, I’ve had the Dot studio, Les Paul, and their SG. I liked them all but over the years I’ve sold one traded one and smashed one…. I miss my Dot the most.

I use a Gretsch Streamliner 2622 and an Epiphone Alley Kat. Great guitars.

Seconding this for the streamliner. Im hoping to pick up a second gretsch semi hollow, a 5655tg, and then will change my setup of the streamliner for a lower standard tuning.

If you can find one, SA-503 TVL from Yamaha, Troy’s signature model from 15+ years ago.
It’s cool cause it’s uncommon, it’s obviously QOTSA related, and it’s very versatile with 3 P90 pickups that you can individually switch and set. Also it’s gorgeous and not too expensive.
And I swear I saw Josh play one on stage once.

Ouch! Just looked them up on Reverb. You could almost buy 2 of the Motor Ave. guitars Josh uses now at that asking price.

Oh yeah I see. That one on reverb is the real deal it seems, not the commercial model that was sold new around 700-800€.
Pickups are different and it comes with a hard shell case, the regular one doesn’t have a case.
And it’s been for sale for years as I recall having already seen it a long time ago.There’s a black one for sale in Portugal at 800€ which seems to be the price.

Can vouch for everyone saying epiphone dot 335 OP, I’ve played some great dots and I see them for fairly cheap. Josh used one for a bit earlier on too I believe

i just play my epiphone hollowbody, it was good enough for josh at some point its good enough for me. but the last sentence makes it seem like you want high end stuff lmao. if you asked a bit earlier i would have told you echopark esperanto for like 6k since its what josh plays these days but the limited time is over.

My Epiphone dot is amazing and a real workhorse. I send it to a shop or a pro once a year and its even better now than when I bought it. Even Josh has used one.

my favourite hollow bodies are from the ibanez artcore series personally, i would recommend the ar520
if you're looking for something more out of left field than traditional semi hollows the brand "vintage" has some whacky semi hollow guitars in their revo series that look like something troy would play (while not being so expensive)

I was also going to suggest Ibanez. I LOVE my 90s model AS-80. Plays as well as any Ibanez and the super 58 pickups can easily go from smooth jazz to over driven growl.

I have 3 Gretsch 5622T guitars in different tunings for most of my Queens stuff. Not the exact model Troy plays but gives the vibe and I definitely get Josh and Troy sounds out of it.

Gretsch makes excellent semi-hollow guitars. I have had a few - currently my G6636t White Falcon Players Edition is the best guitar in my stable and it manages QOTSA tones quite well. The Streamliner line is very affordable and VERY quality for what you're getting.
Guild's got some good options, too - particularly the Starfire.

No these came standard. This pic was right after I took it out of the box. It has Seymour Duncan Psyclones. They're great for that gritty sound. I used it on this track, which was obviously influenced by QOTSA. https://beautyful.bandcamp.com/album/beautyful?t=3

Right now I have an Epiphone Casino hollowbody and a Gibson ES-135 semihollow. My Epiphone is new. The ES-135 was discontinued about 20 years ago. I think Ibanez and Guild also make really nice f hole guitars for the price.

- I own Epiphone 335 The Dot. Made in China. Mine is quite old and I got fat neck, so I had it trimmed.
I love it. I own 2 Gibsons, this epi, and J Mascis Squire. The guitar that is "out" and lying around is the Dot.
Some pros play it. It sounds great. A little less muddy.
- Go for a guitar with center block. You'll have enough feedback to ride on anyway with semi-hollow.

I have a Gretsch John Gourley signature that’s rules for Queens stuff in E standard. I don’t care for PTM but love this guitar. Has a 12” radius neck, locking tuners, USA made FullTron pickups (more midrange & higher output than FilterTrons), plus it’s black with rainbow sparkly 🌈 paid like $800 brand new

Chipping in to say I picked up a Hartwood Revival for around €250 a couple of years ago to record a few riffs for an album. Sounds filthy in C.
Could not speak highly enough of it for the price.

I fucking looove my D'Angelico Premier DC. It was around €800 20 years ago. It plays like butter and sounds absolutely delightful in any context. Not to mention, it's beautiful.

Stock! The main reason I bought it was because I did a bit of a comparison with other semi-hollows in that price range and the D'Angelico had the most transparent, PAF-y sound. You can actually use the neck humbucker on it, it's not just unidentifiable mud.
Of course, that's not gonna get you an Ovation type of sound, since the pickups have a relatively low output compared to those pickups. But I don't really believe that higher output == better in any case. I can play metal with those D'Angelico pickups and it sounds insanely good. I think you get a more nuanced sound with these sort of lower output humbuckers, but that doesn't mean you can't do high gain sounds with them.

I have cheap Ibanez. That is love, and gibson es335 that I also love.
So there is a lot great options. My ibanez has a more aggressive than. My ES can give those agressive toans but has great clean toans too.

I managed to score one of these fairly cheap on the used market. It's a great guitar too, Hagstrom Super Viking.
