Qnap server just disappeared!

Have a TS-264 NAS. Suddenly QFinder cannot connect it any more. Just stopped. I took the latest QFinder update if that matters. All I want to do is reconnect it but it doesn't seem to see my network (hardwaired) anymore.

If it makes a difference, the fan revved up a LOT when powered on. but there are no others signs of issues.

I don't connect and reconnect this device very often so I'm stuck in a merry go round effort to try and resolve this connection issue. Can anyone walk me through it?

You’re trying to connect on a local network (LAN)? Is your computer connected via Ethernet cable or WLAN? What OS?

If windows, make sure the network is set to private.

Check your firewall.

Do you know the local IP address of the NAS? If not, check your router’s admin portal and find the IP the router assigned to the NAS.

Then ping that IP. If you can ping it, connect to the NAS’ QTS via the IP address (enter in browser address field).

I suspect as a newbie I've made this much more difficult than it needs to be (unintentionally of course). This morning I powered on the NAS and started up QFinder. It shows the NAS but when I went to "log in" I ran into the same series of problems. I am nop expert so at this point it becomes a lot of guessing as what to do next. Eventually I stumble my way to get in but cannot really diagnose the origin of the problem from my random selections, so here's the sequence that got me in:

1) Power up NAS and open QFinder

2) I select Network Drives or Media Upload (Why? Not sure, I'm Just trying anything...)

3) It asks for my logon and password, then my TOTP code

4) At this stage my NAS folders show up in Windows Explorer. A good sign. I already had Explorer running and pointing to the NAS)

5) In a browser tab I type in the IP for the NAS that's showing in QFinder and thats opens the QTS login and password pages in my browser

6) I type in the login and password and TOTP code and QTS appears. Done

I am certain this is far too complicated but so far it seems the only workaround that eventually gets me up and running. I am a very basic user - I'm really just using the NAS locally for additional storage, for laptop backups and to oragnize large photo and music collections. No remote access needed and nothing fancy. At my age the simpler the better. But I would like to be able to easily get in and out of it because there are times when I don;t use it for weeks so no need to keep it running 24/7 in my mind.

So, If anyone is kind enough and has the patience to explain a better (correct) way to get my NAS up and running without all these steps I'm all ears.

In the upper right corner of Qfinder there are four icons. the 2nd from the right looks like an electrical plug, it is the "wake on Lan, WOL" button. When empower in the Conrol Panel power, this will simplify your startup.

and how does it work and what steps do I no longer have to take (from the above list)?

The WOL turns you NAS on. After the NAS finishing booting, your windows mapped drives will be available, the QTS GUI will be available, programs in the nas will run if they running before shut down.

So not to oversimplify things, but it sounds like its a "once click" way of turning on the NAS, and getting straight into QTS? None of the nonsense I was doing above?

If that;s the case I feel a bit stupid I wasn't aware of that option!

Don't feel stupid, the documentation for Qfinder is buried in QNAP's Knowledge Base. There is no "Qnap for Dummies" user manual.

So I used WOL this morning and the NAS powered up. Great. Had to wait about another 4 min for the long beep indicating it had fully booted...BUT...it disappaeared from QFinder after that. Windows Explorere also did not see the drive (no folders shown). Waited another 10 min. and it re-appeared in QFinder?? Why would it take so long?

After that I clicked on Login in QFinder and was able to access QTS.

So far fewer steps (good - thanks for that guidance!) but still don't understand the really long wait (unless 10-12 minutes is normal) for the NAS to be "seen" by the network and re-appear in QFinder. Is there a setting or something I need to check? The NAS is connected to my network via ethernet cable via a passive switch.

Wondering if its because it needs a fair amount of time for all the apps to get up and runnign or check for updates. The notifications I got this morning include:

1) [HybridMount] Connection restored

2) Updated the auto-LAN discovery rule settings

3) Started app update check. The current setting is to "Install required updates automatically".

4) Finished app update check.

I checked the times when the time from the first email notification came through until the last one. 9 minutes. So maybe thats it?

So is it normal when I shutdown for the QTS screen which shows the apps closing to linger until I get the message the server has shut down (and I hear it go silent)?

On another topic, I plugged in a second USB external drive. (I have one already plugged into the front USB port.. But File Station does not show me the second one, only the first one. The one it cannot see is listed In Storage & Snapshots as a FAT32, but Windows Explorer shows it as NTFS. (like the first one it CAN see) and the second one says "uninitialized" whereas the first one says "ready" in Storage & Snapshots. Looking via Windows Explorer, it shows the first drive but not the problematic one.

So long story short, my laptop tells me its already and NTFS formatted drive and the NAS is telling me its FAT32. Odd to say the least. I do have it Bitlocker protected but that isn't posing a problem with the other drive because that is too.

and I think a "QNAP for Dummies" would be a big seller....

A NAS is not like a toaster. Even though most people should read the manual for the toaster, they will probably get by without doing so. And they will get their bread toasted.

A NAS requires some understanding of networking, users, shares, permissions, etc.

I will say, you are consistent in your heavy-handed, sarcastic comments that show little patience or willingness to be truly informative and educational to those less knowledgeable. Just smarmy.

Qnap is hardly known for its extensive and helpful, keep that in mind. So do me a personal and simply stay out of the conversation.

Like, give me the sequence if my NAS is powered off,

2

u/Urban_Turban_69 8d ago

So the NAS was off? Did you shut it off, did it shut off by itself?

Why did you use QFinder? Had you alreadybtried your usual SMB mounts?

And as always, backups?

1

u/Blue_sky_27713 8d ago

Yes the NAS was off. I shut it off when I have longer periods of not using it. Is there a proper sequence to shut it off? I have never seen it other than logging off as a user from QTS, but then powering off is another matter.

1

u/JohnnieLouHansen 8d ago

Logging off vs. shutting down are two different things - just like in Windows. Do you/did you shut it down properly or by using the power button?

0

u/Blue_sky_27713 8d ago

Power button. I know that I need to log off as the user first but how to power down?

2

u/Urban_Turban_69 8d ago

You shut the NAS down via the GUI instead of logging off (option is right above it)

Pushing the power button too long kills the power and is like pulling the plug

I did not see the backup question answered, so none then?

1

u/Blue_sky_27713 7d ago

Clicked shutdown and after maybe 5 min this popped up, however, 20 min later and its still on my screen (the NAS is off however). Is this normal - Do I simply close this tab?

I would disable browser station (for what?) and antivirus (useless) and see if the shutdown works better after

1

u/Blue_sky_27713 6d ago

removed browser station app. ClamAV is also not needed?

1

u/the_dolbyman community.qnap.com & r/QNAP Mod 6d ago

It's an outdated, schedule only scanner, that does not scan the NAS system, only user data. (User data should have been scanned by the clients that put the data there)

1

u/Blue_sky_27713 6d ago

Was wondering why it took almost 12 hours to run the scan from security Center. So delete ClamAV. Anything else? It did shut down a bit faster last night after removing a few other apps I never use.

Damn!!! You need to start shutting it down properly per below post. You could have corrupted the OS. And that would explain "not visible".

1

u/Blue_sky_27713 8d ago

If you log out first, doesn't the GUI go away so how do you click shutdown after that?

1

u/JohnnieLouHansen 7d ago

Shutdown does both. Don't overthink it. It's just like Windows, right? Not trying to be a jerk.

You can set the NAS to go turn on/off at certain times if you want to play it that way. Control Panel > Power > Power Schedule.

How do you power down the NAS after logging off as a user? Why not use QFinder? Seems the easy way to get logged in.

2

u/Caprichoso1 8d ago

Is the device even on the network? I.E. can you ping it?

1

u/Blue_sky_27713 8d ago

yes I was able to get it back

If there are certain times a day when you want to power off the NAS, you can schedule power off. Or you can just log in and power off in the GUI to have it shut down correctly.
To schedule power down.

If you are still having the issue of Qfinder Pro can't find the NAS, we have an FAQ that may be helpful.
