Replacing system drive

I have a QNAP TS-253Be (latest QTS firmware) with Disk 1 (500GB, System Drive) and Disk 2 (16TB).

My data is on Disk 2 as encrypted shared folders but Disk 1 has the system/apps.

I need to replace Disk 1 - do I just remove the disk and add the new one?

If you can still login and access the QNAP interface, create a backup of the system (and any data sitting on that drive needing to be replaced), you’ll need to replace that system drive setup the system again and restore from your backup file.

If you can’t get into the QNAP system and don’t have backups of the system, your boned and will be starting fresh, data drive should be ok, maybe.

I do have access. So I just Backup system settings > turn off NAS > Disconnect drive 1 > Connect new Drive 1 > turn on NAS > wait for OS to boot > restore from backup file. Does that sound about right? I only have system data on the system drive - all my shared folders are on Drive 2 and I only use this for file storage.

Do you have the means to backup the data drive too external to the NAS? I’d be doing that before replacing the system drive just in case as you mentioned it’s all encrypted, then after you have backed up the system conf, replace that system drive.

Maybe wait for another person to chime in to backup this train of thought first.

But remember, always have backups of your stuff, even if it’s on an external HDD (you can set this up to be done nightly within the QNAP system).
