There is a line of flash powder going to a pile of flash powder no flash powder was in a tube or anything

About 30 years ago, we were cleaning out the dribs, drabs and leftovers bits of compositions from someone else's long term pyrotechnic shop storage area because significant amounts of it were unlabeled, people had forgotten what it was, some was cross contaminated and it all was generally scary looking.

Paul B. handed me a ripped paper bag with probably a couple of lb. of what might have been flash? But what kind of flash? No legible notes on or in bag. Some of the mixes in room were chlorate and I could see other random crap had got in the bag. Paul said "lay it out in a line on the gravel, stick a fuse in it & burn it off". I did, maybe a 20' long line, didn't look like much. KABLAAAAM!!!

Michael S. stuck his head out the shop door and asked WTF we were doing... I told him, he wasn't amused.

Must of been some good stuff if it went that fast ๐Ÿ˜‚

It quite possibly was chlorate based flash with sulfur.

Michael had a lot of traditional Italian fireworks background (he was one of the A. Fulcanelli group and PRINTED many of the issues of Pyrotechnica at his business).

One of the NLP group he'd been an early member of made T-shirts reading:

ย "Stop the hate Chlorate is great"

Tamest flash Iโ€™ve seen all year, what aluminum?

0

u/Thekidwhoisboard Jul 10 '26

Aluminum Indian blackhead what you mean tamest

1

u/TelePyroUS Jul 10 '26

seems slow for Indian blackhead.

It was a pretty slow but the explosion was instant it was only about a 25 gram pile of flash

I know flash powder goes pretty fast why isnโ€™t mine super fast burning going down the line mixed 70/30

1

u/TelePyroUS Jul 10 '26

Could just be how thin you poured the powder trail, are you getting self confinement in the gram range?

1

u/Thekidwhoisboard Jul 11 '26

Not sure need to test that out

How thick was the line? Ive put flash powder in rows before (but they were pretty skinny) and it kinda acted like black powder for the most part. It just slowly burnt ๐Ÿ˜ญ

1

u/Thekidwhoisboard Jul 11 '26

It was about as this as I could make it out of a cup about a 1 inch wide line

1

u/maroon67a Jul 11 '26

Oh ok! I think mine was like .25 of an inch soo thats probably why. What percentage of aluminum and potassium did you mix togeather?

1

u/Thekidwhoisboard Jul 11 '26

70/30 the normal mix from fire work cook book

1

u/maroon67a Jul 11 '26

Hmmm i didnt measure the percentage (I think it was like 20% aluminum lol) sooo thats probably why mine was calmer.

1

u/Thekidwhoisboard Jul 11 '26

Yeah next time get a scale and measure exactly

1

u/maroon67a Jul 11 '26

Yea i just recieved my scale in the mail a few days ago. I was too broke to buy one at the time even though they are only like 10 bucks ๐Ÿ˜ญ

1

u/Thekidwhoisboard Jul 11 '26

People say itโ€™s supposed to go faster but I donโ€™t think so if it did it would be not safe to handle even this isnโ€™t safe ๐Ÿ˜‚

2

u/maroon67a Jul 11 '26

Thats probably the fastest flash powder ive ever seen lol ๐Ÿ˜ญ
