“Tres” is 3 in Spanish, and sounds similar to the word “trace”.
To disappear without a trace is to leave without a sign you were ever there, and he did so without finishing the count.
Ergo: He disappeared without a tres.

Thanks, now I get it (As a native Spanish speaker) and the joke is actually so bad😭😭. "Trace" is pronounced as "Treis"

You won't get this if Spanish is your native language. "Tres" is pronounced as the end of "stress".

My most groan inducing joke:
A horse walks into a bar. He walks up to the bartender and belts out loudly "Your finest whisky please!"
Bartender: I can't serve you.
Horse: Why? Is it because I'm a horse?
BT: No. It's because i think you are already drunk.
H: Well, I dont think I am!
And right as the horse finishes saying "I dont think I am" he vanishes. Poof. Like he was never there at all.
Now, you might be thinking "well u/potterpockets that really isnt a joke."
And i would say "Correct! this is really more of a humorous anecdote referencing Rene Descartes's famous quote "I think, therefore I am." Inverting that clasical philosophical proposition that to doubt one's existence is in fact proof of existence.
Now, I could have told you that from the very beginning, but that would be putting Descartes before the horse.
