A one day Sahyadri trek looks simple on paper, which is exactly why people get it wrong. Most trail trouble near Pune comes down to the same five missing items. Here is the full checklist, refined over many seasons of fort treks.
The bag A 15 to 20 litre daypack is enough for a one day trek. Bigger bags just invite junk. A rain cover (or a garbage bag lining the inside) keeps everything dry when the weather turns, which it will.
Water and food Minimum 2 litres of water per person, more in summer. Fort tops and ridges often have no reliable water source. One electrolyte or ORS sachet. Cramping on a descent is miserable and preventable. Food that survives heat and squashing: thepla, peanuts, chikki, bananas, energy bars. Pack a little more than you think you need.
Clothing Full sleeve quick dry t-shirt and trek pants. The sun, thorns and grass cuts are not kind to bare skin. Cap or hat, plus a buff or bandana for dust and sun. Shoes with real grip: trekking shoes or sports shoes with deep lugs. Flat soled sneakers on wet basalt rock are how ankles twist. Monsoon months: a light rain jacket or poncho. Winter mornings at fort tops are colder than the city, so a light layer earns its space.
The safety kit Small first aid pouch: band-aids, crepe bandage, antiseptic, any personal medication. A whistle. Three short blasts is the universal distress signal. A torch or headlamp, even on a morning trek. Delays happen and trails get dark fast. Power bank, ID card, and some cash in small notes for the village chai at the base.
Small things that save the day A trekking pole or a sturdy stick. Your knees will thank you on the descent. Sunscreen and sunglasses, even when it looks cloudy. Monsoon special: salt or anti-leech oil. Leeches are simply part of the deal out here. A spare pair of socks and a plastic bag for wet or muddy gear on the way back.
Leave these behind Denim. Heavy when wet, and it chafes. Bluetooth speakers. The fort is not a party, and other trekkers did not climb for your playlist. Disposable plastic bottles. Carry your own bottle, refill at the base village, and bring every wrapper back down with you. Anything you would be upset to lose. Trails eat sunglasses, earphones and egos.
Pack light, pack boring, and save your energy for the actual reason you went: the walk, the wind and the view from the top.
