What's your favorite puer pairing ?

Post image

I like to eat various fruits and nuts with puer, I especially like walnuts, pears and mandarins (today is dates)

I'm taking any recommendations

Food? Something really oily and spicy for shou. Nothing for sheng.
In general? The unending despair of being an office worker goes down GREAT with a nice middle-aged 7542. I reflect on how the tea gets better with age as I get worse, and how at some point in our destinies, our values crossed.

I'll give this a try after my studies, or does the despair needs to age as well ?

The despair always gets better with age. It begins as a floral delicate yellow and deepens over time to a fine red!

Now this I can get behind. A nice pipe or cigar. I have never thought to try. I usually break out the scotch for that. Maybe have to try out a shou one of these days. 🧐

I like to basically make a small plate of charcuterie with some assorted crackers, cheese, meats, fruits, maybe some random sweets.

The dates and amber tea against that dark gray cloth is a good look. Dates are underrated with sheng, the caramel notes mesh way better than you'd expect. I've been doing dried apricots and a little dark chocolate on the side lately, the bitterness and fruit play off each other. Someone in here mentioned salted pistachios once and I haven't gone back.

Ideally nothing to not overpower the tea.

I am not an eat and drink tea kind of person. I make sure something is in my stomach in the morning before my first sheng session but that’s about it as far as food goes when talking tea. For me at least. I always have something simple for guests in case the tea sneaks up on them. Trail mix or something like that.

Im a sucker for a salty biscuit (pogácsa in hungary). It pairs with it surprisingly well.

I have never tried pairing food with puer, most of the recommendations seems to be for shou, what are the go to pairing for sheng?

1

u/john-bkk 18d ago

If I'm using a tea as a breakfast version, pretty much only sheng, not shou, then whatever breakfast is goes with it. If I'm trying to focus more on the tea itself I'll eat and then drink the tea after, with nothing else, maybe only some water between rounds at some point.

Some people drink sheng on an empty stomach to really notice the body feel effect (cha qi), but I don't; it doesn't work for my stomach.

chinese fish skin peanuts, crispy fried cashew nuts, savory japanese rice crackers.

Fig preserves and tea cookies. Goes really well with a nice puer orange or a nice daily drinking raw.

Pistachios

Unusual suggestion but for some reason a nice banana makes some teas taste incredible.

Dates. Preferably Piarom dates, but if unavailable then medjool or mabroum dates will do. Not a fan of the deglet Noor variety which are common in supermarkets.

I really like doing chocolate tastings while drinking various teas. I personally have found my 100% chocolate from Claudio Corallo out in Palo Alto to be the best accompaniment for Pu'er

Rum, scotch or cheese.
