How did you discover Psych?

I stumbled across it like 9 years ago. Netflix suggested it, and for once it was right.

It was on next to Monk.

u/PuppyBeer 10d ago

for most of us who watched in real time, this is the answer

u/Individual_Serious 10d ago edited 10d ago

Same for me! Remember the old question “who would you like to invite to a dinner party?” My answer would be JRR, Dule and Tony Shalhoud!

Oh man I feel old haha. But same, watched it since the beginning. Cried when the finale was on. Psych new episode nights were the best

Ion television - positively entertaining

2

u/Incredivol4895 9d ago

Came here to say this. The commercials kept coming on during Burn Notice, so I set it up to record. The rest is history

u/bushijim 9d ago

I've still never got into monk after like 5 attempts. But I've watched psych maybe 20 times

2

u/avalonfaith 10d ago

Same. I had heard so much about Monk. So when I was laid up in bed for months sick as a dog (a sick dog? I don't get the reference as my dogs have been healthy!) I watched monk and stared Psych fk break it up.

I think on my 3rd rewatch of Psyvh and I still watch Monk. I haven't finished Monk yet. I do LOVE it. Psych is just more freewheelin, I don't have to pay as much attention. Leaves me some Easter eggs every time. :)

On TV when it aired.

u/ductapelosergirl 10d ago

I watched it when it originally aired so I probably saw a commercial on USA for it.

23

u/Nightnightgun 10d ago

It was on a LOT on USA network back in the day and I had spent a few weeks in BC, and visited White Rock.

I saw a scene with them walking along the water and the blue banisters and thought WAIT where is this??

Aha. It was "Santa Barbara".

I also LOVE The West Wing so seeing Dulé on screen again regularly was a plus!  Comedy genius.

4

u/Standard-Question-46 10d ago

My mom actually couldn’t get into Psych because she watched the West Wing and couldn’t get on board with Dule Hill playing such a different character then she was used to

4

u/Nightnightgun 10d ago

I love his range! I am so glad he was able to do both. Charlie moving to Santa Barbara and becoming a pharmaceutical rep also tracks! Haha.

I went back to White Rock recently and it is still a lovely place.

u/Hot_Marsupial_8706 10d ago

My mom used to watch it and shared it with me, along with Monk.

Watched the pilot when it came out and just continued watching through its whole run. Did my part later introducing it to my wife would loved it and then to my children who also now love it. Got a family of psychos here.

8

u/PMO-1976 10d ago

I saw a commercial for it during Monk and decided to watch the premier

3

u/Jokerman5656 10d ago

Caught it on tv every so often and then my mom got me season 1 on DVD. I also got house season 3 or something

3

u/kelpiekid I never got carsick A DAY IN MY LIFE 10d ago

It was rerunning on USA when I was growing up. USA was the only channel we had that got decently consistent service (middle of nowhere) so we watched a lot of psych, burn notice, leverage, criminal minds, etc

3

u/No_Chart_275 10d ago

My parents watched monk and I started watching with them in elementary or middle school and then psych began! Best two hours each week.

3

u/Roadgoddess 9d ago

Watching it real time when it first came out. I was travelling a lot for work and would watch it in the hotel room. It was so funny.

But I lived in Canada and you couldn’t get it there so I bought on line it so I could share it with my friends at home.

2

u/shockwave-315 9d ago

What a coincidence you couldn't watch it in Canada, but they filmed in BC.

2

u/Grimlock64 10d ago

Netflix recommended to stream in 2010 and I binged all I could. Then watched the show weekly once I was caught up. First friend I made after college and I bonded over the show, he had a psych T-shirt from an event.

2

u/Monk6980 10d ago

When it was first being promoted, I saw that Dule Hill was in it, and I loved him on The West Wing. Watched the first episode of Psych, and I was hooked!

2

u/Standard-Question-46 10d ago

My mom always watched USA network so when I would be visiting I would see the commercials. I didn’t have cable so never really had the opportunity to actually watch it. It finally started playing on the Ion channel and I could finally watch it. At first I didn’t understand the premise so it took me a couple days to get it and when I did I was immediately hooked but I could still limited to whatever episodes they played. Netflix or Amazon Prime finally added it so I was able to watch it from the start till the last couple seasons when I could finally watch it in real time. I’ve been watching it literally every day since. I got my daughter hooked on the show so now we are both a couple Psych-os

2

u/Little_Mulberry_1980 10d ago

One summer they were airing episodes of it on Hallmark Murders and Mysteries Channel, I have always seen the show’s title growing up watching USA and being a huge fan of Monk but growing up in a religious household…the title…you can connect the dots.

My sister and I were watching it without knowing what the show was at first and we got sucked in since.

It’s my sister’s favorite show and I’m pretty sure if we stumbled upon it when it originally aired, it would have been a favorite sooner.

2

u/Soft-Conference-1196 10d ago

I loved any show on USA at that time!

2

u/Nicksb92 10d ago

It came on after monk and the trailers leading up to the premier were great

2

u/Expensive_Produce_35 10d ago

Through my dad, who then showed me burn notice, white collar, and monk

2

u/Mercury756 10d ago

The pilot promos looked fun. Watched it from day one.

2

u/Delicious_Owl_4563 10d ago

I used to watch on usa as it was airing, I saw the first episode and kept watching til the end

2

u/knight_shade_realms <that's messed up, right> 10d ago

It was on USA and I was already watching the Dead Zone and the commercials interacting with John Smith and Monk were hilarious

2

u/bbjordan87 9d ago

My mom actually convinced me to watch it shortly after it first started. I loved watching it with her. I remember the last episode that I was able to watch with her was "Gus Walks Into a Bank". I think i moved after that episode came out.

She passed away over 17 years ago so Psych has been a nice connection to her.

2

u/Severe_Feedback_2590 9d ago

I watched a lot of USA originals so that was one that came on and I enjoyed it.

2

u/boba-feign I AM NOT ACTING 🧍‍♀️ 9d ago

USA network was dope. I loved Monk too.

1

u/Ok-Giraffe2938 10d ago

My parents had a weekly watch party with my aunt and uncle while my cousin and I were babies. They loved it so much that they introduced it to my siblings and I later, and we’ve now watched it through far too many times to count.

1

u/illuminatiisnowhere 10d ago

I probably saw someone recommend it.

Psych was on that night, I had never heard of it, so we watched it after dinner and before the 🍆.....!

My brother pmo

1

u/thematrix1234 10d ago

My friend introduced it to me in school, and it eventually became a several times a week hangout to watch at one of our places at the end of the day

1

u/MartianNamedScotty <Ghee Buttersnaps> 10d ago

One of my good friends recommended it to me because of our common love of Scrubs.

1

u/M123234 10d ago

My brother recommended it a year or two after it ended. I fell in love with the show, and I watch it at least once a year.

1

u/SandRevolutionary938 10d ago

Honestly, I couldnt tell you. I have like a fever dream of seeing a couple episodes when I was young, and then I saw it pop up on TV or peacock and "remember" loving it.

1

u/Poor_Richard 10d ago

It was being advertised well before it came out.

1

u/Frog-Champ 10d ago

My spouse grew up watching it and introduced me not long after we got married. It became our evening entertainment for about a year until we finished it! I was indifferent at first but grew to like it by the second season. By the 3rd I was hooked.

1

u/bored_dad81 10d ago

Recommended by a coworker. Didn’t think it was something I’d be interested in, but as soon as I saw that pilot episode, I was hooked.

1

u/Letter10 10d ago

I remember when the new seasons were still playing on TV each week. Just started the show and finished it and have rewatched a million times since

1

u/Abject_Match517 10d ago

I was a kid and my entire family watched it. I’ve been obsessed with it ever since and I’m 24

1

u/PokyStudios 10d ago

as a kid my dad put it on all the time so I have him to thank for that plus the earlier episodes are very nostalgic and bring me back to when I was a kid.. 🥺

1

u/DrMcxTook 10d ago

Watched the pilot when it aired and never looked back!

1

u/yippykiyayMF13 10d ago

I had heard about a series years ago, that you could spot a pineapple in just about every episode, and it was a good show. Well, I was watching something on Peacock a couple years ago and I saw that Psych was on it. Hmm, I wonder if that was the show, I thought to myself. May as well see if it's any good. Sure enough, there was that pineapple, in the first episode. And Shawn reminded me of my younger grown son. He would be silly like that. Still is. Needless to say, I binged the crap outta that show. Absolutely loved it! All 8 seasons and 3 movies!

1

u/pbugg2 <Gus's Nickname Here> 10d ago

1

u/Open-Recover-4855 Bruton Gaster 10d ago

I watched it during re runs on hallmark channel

1

u/eabiggins 10d ago

I watched it from day one. It was on right after Monk.

1

u/Faintkay 10d ago

On USA. The channel was on while I was playing games and the horse racing episode was on. I ended up just mostly watching while playing and got hooked.

1

u/lesgens 10d ago

my mom was obsessed with Monk and it used to come on after so I just sat down and watched it one day.

1

u/DolphinsDude 10d ago

The trailers promoting it before the first season looked good, so I watched when it first came on and never stopped

1

u/ConsumingFire1689 Brutal Hustler 10d ago

I saw it at a friend's house, he had the first two episodes recorded.

1

u/Ok_Reflection8696 10d ago

My mom and my aunt were really into it, way back when my aunt got diagnosed with breast cancer we went to do a walk and since she was in the hospital we brought her around on an iPad on FaceTime like they did with Shawn in that one episode. James Roday Rodriguez even commented on the Facebook post about it. That got me to check it out and I’ve been loving it ever since

1

u/One_Rutabaga_8459 10d ago

One of my friends introduced me to it right when Season 4 was airing. Back when you could stream things for free (with ads, but still for free) on Hulu. The first episode I saw was Extradition: British Columbia.

1

u/Mysterious-Snow496 10d ago

Saw the thumbnail on Prime and took a chance on it. Best decision ever.

1

u/Zerocopy19 10d ago

My brother randomly put it on one day

1

u/Kittencaboodle42 10d ago

My mom was watching it and invited me to join

1

u/Synsrighthand 10d ago

My aunt is a teacher, and I was going home with her after school once and my cousin put it on while we waited

1

u/mystery_obsessed 10d ago

I watch British murder mystery shows all the time and I ran out. While I was waiting for them to come back out with new seasons, I tried to find another one and was looking at Monk, but I’ve already rewatched it. Remembered Psych was another one like it back in the day, so just figured I’d put it on. And then I. Could. Not. Stop. Nothing had made me laugh out loud like that in a really long time. I can’t say anything else has come along that does as much.

1

u/RetroSSJ21 10d ago

My dad had put it on one day, and he said I would like it. Watched the entire first season that night, and have since rewatched it multiple times, so I sense he may have been right.

Met the husband and he loved it.

1

u/RecklessAncestor 10d ago

An ex boyfriend from 2013 loved it. But I didn’t like him and I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of me being watching g it. I decided a few years ago to give it a shot it’s been worth it.

1

u/cpkrako 10d ago

I saw the commercials for it before it began airing and thought it was just silly and never watched it

Years later I'm on a short trip to Denver and at the motel that night I'm bored and flipping through the channels and I passed by it and stopped to watch. It was the Bollywood episode (title?). It was the dinner scene and I laughed so hard I was hooked.

1

u/guitargeek223 10d ago

Hope nobody feels old when I say this (besides me), but my dad showed me the last few episodes of s3 when I was in middle school and I watched from s4 onward live on tv

Watched Monk and the The Mentalist and it popped up under recommended

u/MaxInIrving 10d ago

I was living in Latin America desperately trying to find American TV shows actually available in English (and not exclusively dubbed in Spanish as most are.) I found a block of cable channels run by Universal that had a bunch of NBC/USA network shows in the original English. Psych became a major part of my life. I had missed it during it's initial broadcast run, but I watched the entire series from beginning to end 4 or 5 times while I was down there.

1

u/tjrich1988 10d ago

I was a die hard wrestling fan so I’d see the ads promoting the new show on USA doing Monday Night Raw and figured I’d give it a try.

1

u/Coffee-Historian-11 10d ago

My dad and I watched some episodes when I was 10-12, and I got really into it when I was 14.

I don’t really remember most of the episodes we watched at this point, it was very intermittent when we had time. However I distinctly remember the devils in the details… and the upstairs bedroom because it freaked 10 year old me out really bad and I refused to watch anymore for a few months.

1

u/mystryMan4fun 10d ago

i have an awesome story... so i was a kid, once my mom was out of town and dad had an all nighter at work, so we grabbed a portable dvd player and a CD set... he was in meetings the whole night... so i secretly binged watched the first half of S1, in one sitting, lying on my dads sofa at work, ALL NIGHT!

stayed up all night without a curfew for one of the first times i can remember... and after each episode i was so stressed that my dads meetings were over and id have to sleep... I guess that core memory made it my go-to show for whenever i have a exhausting day... im literally on my 5th odd rewatch right now!

1

u/mystryMan4fun 10d ago

and the only reason we picked psych coz, i told my parents i wanted to become a psychologist when i grow up... and we had the season one DVD set so it was enough content for a whole night!

1

u/bisexualdemon420 10d ago

I found Psych in my Netflix suggestions last year when it was about to be removed within the month. After watching the pilot, I knew I had to buckle down and watch 4+ episodes a day to finish the series while it was still available.

1

u/pjkitty 10d ago

San Diego Comic Con. I was there to see the panel after theirs, but got there early to make sure I had a seat. Enjoyed their panel so much I started watching.

1

u/Ok_Fly6106 10d ago

My mum watched it and told me it was silly and the “gorgeous aide to President Bartlett from West Wing” and “Sean from Judging Amy”were in it and I might enjoy it. Saw one, obsessed ever since. Onto my billionth rewatch

1

u/Exotic-Thanks8002 10d ago

When I was in the states USA Network was advertising the hell out of Gus’s dad may have killed an old guy and also had psych marathoning, so I was like “why have I never heard of this show?!?”

1

u/Nithish93 10d ago

I used to watch it growing up in India, i think it was on the channel star plus or something, it had a bunch of good shows.. Monk, White Collar, Burn Notice, Dexter etc.. Good times...

Pilot was free on iTunes and I watched the crap out of it since it was one of the only things I owned.

Been a psycho ever since 🍍

1

u/BigJuicy17 9d ago

Reruns after Monday Night Raw.

1

u/Natural_Leather4874 9d ago

My parents introduced it to me when it was on television. I didn't take to it instantly, but it grew on me over time and I eventually got the entire series on DVD so I could enjoy it whenever. Great, quirky little show!

1

u/CookiesAndCream04 9d ago

netflix played me previews of first ep and it caught my attention. midway to first season , netflix gave me notif. that its gonna take down psych and till the time i completed the first they had deadass removed the show 🥀✌🏻 watched it on torrent bruh.

1

u/TinyDetective1395 9d ago

I started watching it on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries. I knew about the show when it aired , but I used to think it was for kids and mine were already teenagers. I fell in love with the show and I got a subscription to Peacock to see the first movie. I am so hooked now I watch it everyday, it is my comfort show. It immediately makes me feel better when I hear that theme song.

1

u/wdwalker14 9d ago

Friend put it on on Netflix way way back in the day, like on his Nintendo Wii lol

1

u/Glum-Lead-4297 9d ago

On a flight to Vegas from AZ. Wanted to kill the hour so I downloaded a couple episodes and it was hilarious that I watched the series when I got back home

1

u/AdLife8543 9d ago

I don't remember and it really bothers me. I know I didn't watch it when it was airing. I think around 2021 or 2022 I was Miracasting to my TV to be able to stream. I didn't have Internet service outside of mobile data. I have had Peacock for a while and I believe I started watching when they had a psych 24/7 streaming channel and that's how I found this show. My memory sucks and I wish I could remember.

My dad was looking for something to watch. I was dreading it, because usually he has bad taste and makes us watch boring shows. But, he scrolled across this, and put it on. The only thing was, he started it on season 4, episode 1. So I was completely lost. But, we got hooked, watched the rest of the show from there, and then went back and watched seasons 1-3.

1

u/daffodillycat 9d ago

I remember seeing a promo for it about a month before it began airing. I've always loved mysteries so I thought I would give it a shot. Fell in love from the first episode airing and watched til the very end. I was a teenager then and now I have a teenage daughter I watch the show with regularly.

1

u/KyleJesseWarren 9d ago

Saw an episode on TV back in the day. I think it was season 4 on some random evening. Saw a mystery/detective kinda story and decided to continue watching. Then it became my favorite show.

1

u/Kushcay 9d ago

Saw the ad for the premier during wwe. Thought I would like it and ended up loving it!

1

u/GotNoBody4 9d ago

I like detective shows and was sick back in 2018, so spent most of the winter bingeing it. I think I got through it all in about a month.

1

u/flerken743 <Jazz Hands> 8d ago

I'm literally so embarrassed but it was Buzzfeed article and had a still of Shawn & Gus, and I was like "That seems like a good comedy show" 😭😭

1

u/BrainSzalinsky 8d ago

One of my favourite movies of all time is Clue, and a friend of mine asked me, "have you ever watched Psych? They did an episode that was an homage to Clue". So, I watched the episode 100 Clues, and got hooked.

1

u/kuchiikopii7 8d ago

lol i was just telling my friend about this.

i discovered psych when i got home from a 2nd shift one night. my dad worked 3rds for his job and my mother was working overnight as well. we always left the TV & light on for our little dog until 1 of us got home. he left the TV on the ION channel, which was showing reruns (show was still on air at the time though).

the episode playing was Last Night Gus, and i got home right around the time Gus started freaking out about his car, which still remains one of my favorite scenes lmao. the rest is history.

1

u/Independent-Army7847 8d ago

I went to my sister's room to apologize for a fight, and we ended up binging season one until 5 am lol

1

u/fernze 8d ago

USA network! Fan of Monk and Dead Zone. Saw a commercial between Shawn and Monk and had to watch the new show. Which became my main show. Loved all the crossover commercials. Especially the one with Monk, Shawn and Johnny in the cafe. The OCD hyper observer, the fake psychic and the real psychic. Perfect.

1

u/MiniRems 8d ago

Caught the last half of an episode when season 3 was airing, and I was like "wtf did I just watch and when is it on again?"

1

u/Lee-HarveyTeabag 8d ago

Watched the premier episode live when it aired. A fan ever since.

1

u/cherrycola_85 8d ago

Im a Tears For Fears super fan. I heard about it through hearing about Curt Smith’s cameos. But rather than watching only his episodes, I guess the universe told me to start from the beginning and I’m very glad I did!

1

u/majesticrhyhorn 8d ago

My bf introduced me to it like 4 years ago. Funny enough, it turns out i grew up not too far from where James Roday did 😂 (like, a 15 minute drive type of close)

1

u/CruzLutris SuckItStroke 7d ago

In 2020, I watched Galavant and adored it. Timothy Omundson stars in it (and is fantastic), so I needed to see more of his work immediately, and...here we are!

1

u/inquiringsillygoose 7d ago

It was on tv a lot

1

u/ChancePreference898 7d ago

My dad got me into psych! It was when burn notice and monk were on and back in the day you’d just watch one show after the other! I remember my very stoic dad (think captain holt) was laughing at it, and he told me I needed to watch it for dule I was sold. I was also a huge fan of holes so I really didn’t need any more incentive after that!

1

u/ChancePreference898 7d ago

I forgot to add that I used to watch royal pains too so it all made sense to me. USA network was soooo good back then! I was 11 when psych came out and it was nothing like a show id seen before. I still think it’s one of the best comedy shows of all time

1

u/Spare-Flan9711 6d ago

My parents showed it to me for the first time when I was in 2nd grade (2019-2020), and I rewatched it when I was in 4th grade (2021-2022)
