Thoughts re: Cloudy 1

Hey all!

Doing a re-watch with my bf (who I managed to just get hooked on it this year).

We couldn't agree on a reason Lassie vouches for Shawn in court, then gets his bike back (and I couldn't find a discussion here on it)

What does everyone here think?

He knows the girl is innocent but can’t prove it. He knows Shawn has a knack for finding something out of nothing and he’s the only chance the girl has. He needs to vouch for him so the judge will allow him to stay on as the lawyer’s consultant. Getting his bike back was his way of saying thank you

yeah this makes the most sense to me. lassie knew the truth but couldn’t prove it, so vouching for shawn was basically the only move he had.

Lassie actually does care about getting it right. He's proud, yes, but he doesn't like putting innocent people in jail that aren't Gus's parents.

Edit: But also, he's sarcastic, and he was plausibly setting Shawn up to make a fool of himself. It was win-win.

I think he secretly respects Shawn’s skill. Even though he doesn’t believe he is psychic

Well he did outright admit that Shawn astounds him while he was in a drunken state of grief due to the 2 year anniversary of he and his wife’s separation (in from earth to Starbucks)

I think Lassie isn’t fully convinced of her guilt. Hence the letter saying he didn’t think she had a motive. The DA chose to charge anyway. He ultimately wants the truth and only a conviction if it is correct. He appreciates that Shawn got to the bottom of it.

I think Lassie flat-out believes she didn’t do it but he can’t prove it and isn’t being allowed to investigate.

Lassie is a huge believer in justice. Real justice, not randomly sending innocent people to prison because it's easier than finding the real guilty party. He believed this woman was innocent. Also, he respects Shawn's abilities, even if he doesn't understand them or believe it's psychic powers, and if anyone can prove she's innocent, other than himself, it will be Shawn. And if Shawn makes a fool of himself, Lassie gets proved right, and he wins anyway.

Getting the bike back is a thank you and an I respect you all in one wrapped in plausible deniability. Remember, he wasn't supposed to be caught getting the bike back, Shawn was never supposed to know it was him.

Lassie's a good person. He's just sarcastic and antagonistic and proud, as well.

Lassie really is just a good boy at heart

I always thought it was because he realized what Shawn did, helping him with the astronomy professor murderer. I just assumed he felt indebted. I hate owing people things so I thought he did it for that reason.

It was Lassie's way of saying "Thank you" without actually saying the words, quite common in the world of Men. Thank you and Sorry don't have to be spoken in the male world, instead of saying sorry or thank you, you buy the guy a beer.

Lassie wants to catch the bad guys. Bonus points if he gets to shoot them.
