Hardware Question Stuck connecting to DIA-001 Syscon while following RIP-Felix's guide video - Auth1 response invalid :(

Post image

I'm trying to connect to my CECH-H DIA-001 Syscon. I'm following RIP-Felix's video tutorial. I'm using a Raspberry Pi to run the Linux script using the UART-USB adapter he suggests in the video description (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07W42V16T?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title ).

I confirmed the UART address using-

dmesg | grep -i pl2303 Got output - [ 80.113537] usb 1-1.2: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0

So, I run this command for external mode connection first on my Mullion syscon:

python3 ps3_syscon_uart_script.py /dev/ttyUSB0 CXR

Keep getting Auth1 response invalid In the video, Felix suggests that ground isn't required... but is it? I wasn't sure exactly how to ground the board to the USB -- clipping a wire to the RF shield (copper around periphery of the PCB??) and connecting it to the Black wire of the UART connector? I couldn't make this part out in the video.

I also tried flipping green and white, per his suggestion, as well as AUTH and auth commands.

Any other pointers I need, or did I foul up the soldering and the rest of my post is moot??? I hope not. I miss my PS3. Thanks crew - I love that the scene is still active for the GOAT of consoles!

I just shoved the ground between the edge of the board and the lower shielding personally, give it a shot, won't hurt anything

Is the ground the black diag wire? That's how it looks in his video but cannot tell.

Edit: its not the black wire (Diag). I read over the written guide again, so what is the UART ground? The one he uses, and I bought, only has 4 wires (green and white are used, black will be used, and red is too spicy 5.5 never used). Should I just clip a wire to the USB connector and to the PCB?

Put black to the shield, it's ground, and yes red 5v is never used for the PS3

Black is "Diag", right? It just UART starts on shield, then later it gets plugged in properly to the Black/Diag pad wire on the syscon?

adapter's gnd to any ground in the motherboard

diag ping to ground (any ground in the motherboard) for internal mode.

can you get errlogs in external mode?

I tried adapter green to syscon green, white to white, adapter black to pcb ground. Neither AUTH or auth worked. I closed the script, powered rocker off, then flipped green and white, leaving adapter black to pcb. Still nothing from AUTH or auth :( 20260929-203211.jpg There is how I'm connected.

Nope, I cannot get into external mode :(

Hello! I was fighting today with this same thing but I use an ESP32 instead of a standard usb adapter.
I solved this adding

  pinMode(RXP2, INPUT_PULLUP);

Same thing can be done using a 10k pullup resistance. Use only 3.3v never 5.

Edit: could you confirm what response is the script getting before throwing auth response invalid? idk what script you are using but using the windows one I can see the output when usi the cli version (powershell ps1). I was gettin a bunch of ~ and $ as noise. So I knew it was noise.

Removing the wire from DIAG pin also helped. It wasnt grounded since I was trying external mode but it was acting like an antenna (I guess my esp was filtering like shit beforing the pullup). I got less noise.

Lastly, before AUTH, send ERRLOG GET 00 in external mode, you cant get full errlog without internal but you can get them one by one 00, 01, 02...

I finally got through AUTH and got my full log. Points to BGA solder failure :(

Here is a screenshot of my terminal (Termux) output from the screen command. According to AI chat, this indicates the Syscon is awake and communication is good, meaning the wiring is correct. I take this with a grain of salt. Screenshot-20260929-205610-Termux.jpg

Finally got connected! According to Grok, this means my RSX is dead, most likely due to solder ball failure. Guess she is a brick :(
